Given his surgery time, Schmidt won’t be back to the mound until at least late next year, and may not be back until 2027.
Keller will add durability to the group and rotate very strongly in the mid-season next season. It will not necessarily assume that all parties are healthy, but around June, the Yankees do have the chance to deploy rotations including Cole, Fried, Rodon, Keller and Gil on the depth chart as Warren and Warren and Warren and Schlittler. This depth will be listed as the best in baseball.
There are other factors to consider. Keller is midway through the second season of a five-year, $77mm contract. He will be 15mm in 2025 and will earn 16.5mm, 18mm and 20mm in the next three seasons. The Yankees have an annual value of about 17.8mm, taxing the Yankees at 110% clips – assuming they are still at the highest level of forward luxury fines, this seems like a good option.

This is not to say they have no interest in further storing Young pitches, but their goal in the next few weeks is certainly to add at least some young batsmen to help strengthen the stagnant offense, ranking highest in scoring, home runs and beat percentage runs.
