Bowen Byram Saga and Buffalo Sabers are far from over

Buffalo Saber and defensive player Bowen Byram reached a new two-year contract worth $12.5 million and a salary cap of $6.25 million, avoiding arbitration.

Saber acquired Byram from Colorado’s avalanche during the 2024 NHL trade deadline. In his first full season with the Sabres, Byram scored 38 points (7 goals and 31 assists) in all 82 games with 116 blocked shots + 10 plus/minus. Not to mention the restricted free agents encountered in all cases in all Pechez.

Byram has scored a total of 47 points (10 goals and 37 assists) since coming to the Buffalo Saber, with a total rating of +10 in 100 games against the Sabers. He won 110 points (33 goals and 77 assists) in 246 professional season games, winning the Stanley Cup against the Colorado Avalanche in 2022.

NHL Rumor: Buffalo Saber is in trouble with Bowen Byram

There are many chats about Bowen Byram being traded by Buffalo Sabers. Although he hasn’t formally asked for a deal, he is on a third pairing. Not to mention, General Manager Kevyn Adams can’t let another disgruntled player leave the Saber. At some point, he will have to pay the player to stay.

Even if Byram signs a new two-year contract, he can walk to free agents at the end of the 2026-27 season. So the drama involving Byram and Saber has just begun.

If you look at the contract, Byram’s deal is still movable. Because he has the ability to play right as a left gunguard defender, he has had connections with multiple teams during the offseason. But he wants more minutes, not only five to five, but also serve. He played the second pair when the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup. So, for example, a team like St. Louis Blues could use him with Torey Krug’s career.

Although the short-term battle is over, the Saber has won the long-term battle. Byram can still trade. The topic about him being traded remains as his contract of $6.25 million per season is very mobile. The team now knows how much the player is. Therefore, the chat will continue until the off-season until the NHL trade deadline. And if Bowen Byram stays in the Saber roster until the end of the 2025-26 season, trade talks may increase again as he will qualify for signing the extension on July 1, 2026.

NHL Rumor: Which Teams Electioned Payroll Arbitration Means to Bowen Byram

And what if he didn’t sign the extension with the Saber at that time? Then, the entire sound and dance don’t leave the player without getting nothing, so the transaction continues. This is the endless and cruel cycle where Bowen Byram and Buffalo Sabers are. But this new contract is just to continue the drama, not to end the drama like many people do.

So don’t be surprised, even if the waters are now calm in Buffalo, things for Saber and Boram are getting tough again once the season begins.
