Quinn Hutson of the Edmonton Oilers invites to attend the 2025 NHLPA rookie showcase – Hockey Writer – Edmonton Oilers
The National Hockey League Players Association (NHLPA) has released the NHLPA rookie showcase on September 3 at MedStar Copitals Iceplex Arena at the Washington Capitals practice facility in Arlington, Virginia. The display cabinet provides an opportunity to collect videos and pictures of the first official trading card from the NHL’s official trading card partner Upper Deck and use it for other promotional materials. Goalkeeper Olivier Rodrigue served as the Edmonton Oilers in 2024, and Quinn Hutson served as the representative in 2025.

After a successful season with the NCAA’s Boston College Terrier, the Oilers signed Hutson to a two-year entry-level contract (ELC) in April. Boston advanced to Frozen’s four national titles, where they lost 6-2 to the Western Michigan Broncos. The Illinois native scored 23 goals and 50 points in 38 games with the Terriers, his third season with the NCAA. He scored 56 goals and 114 points in 117 games at the college level.
The right-hand winger joined the Oilers immediately after signing, reducing his trade for a year, making him an unrestricted free agent in the end of 2025-26. He played the last two games in the last two games of the tanker regular season but did not register to score points, averaging 13:26 in his limited action. He is expected to play with the American Hockey League (AHL) Bakersfield Condor this season.
Hutson joins elite rookie
Hutson joined a showcase that included the first-time 2025 draft picks, Matthew Schaefer and other first-round draft picks, including Axel Sandin-Pellikka, Jimmy Snuggerud, Tij Iginla, Berkly Catton and Beckett Sennecke. Of the 31 players participating in the competition, there are a total of 20 first-round draft picks. The invitation from the Oil Man was the third largest participant at the age of 23 and two others who were not drafted either. The event will provide an opportunity to expose Hutson to a large number of media coverage, interviews and photos of oilers’ equipment, which is exciting.
However, this choice is surprising given the elite talent and other prospects in the oil worker system. They could have sent 2025 third-round pick Tommy Lafreniere, or 2023 second-round pick Beau Akey. They can also send the latest top prospects, recently acquired Isaac Howard, which is also from the NCAA, such as Hutson. Or, even Matt Savoie, who is ready to jump to the NHL full time. Howard and Savoie have the potential of a senior six, while Hutson’s ceiling is likely to be at the bottom six.
Despite this, the club chose Hutson to get this opportunity. He has a chance to play in the NHL because the oilers need cost-effective bottom hexes with offensive instincts and he fits in that bill. His shots are great and he is expected to contribute to the NHL lineup. Although he is not there yet, he has the potential and hopes that the entire season in the AHL will help him develop. He had a college graduation option but chose Edmonton because it fits well and this showcase would be a great learning experience for him.
