Red Sox won Jorge Alcala

Red Sox is getting right-handed Jorge Alcala From Twins, as Phil Miller of the Star Tribune first reported. Chris Cotillo of Masslive reports infield/outfield prospects Andy Lugo Head to Minnesota in exchange for Alcala’s service. Dan Hayes of Track and Field reported that the twins did not send cash in the transaction. The two teams then officially announced the deal, with Boston designating right-handed Brian Van Belle To create space for Alcala in the 40-man lineup.
According to Aaron Gleeman of Track and Field, the twins plan to designate Alcala in the coming days Joey Wentz Earlier today, the immunity was easy to speculate that the decision to separate from Alcala was motivated by the desire to make room for Wentz in an active roster. Through the pre-emptive Alcala deal, the Red Sox was able to bypass the exemption process in sequence and add right-handers to their bullpen. Even though the twins planned to separate from Alcala before this deal, it was clear that the Red Sox was very interested in the 29-year-old right as they gave up the low-level prospect to attract him and took on the remaining 1.5mm salary of Alcala, which paid cash transactions despite the majority of DFA candidates’ deals being traded by DFA candidates.
Just looking at Alcala’s surface-level numbers, it may be hard to understand why the Red Sox would be obsessed with him. In 22 games this year at Minnesota, he improved his 8.88 ERA with a 5.42 FIP and 13.2% walk rate. These numbers are certainly worrying, but even in this down season, Alcala’s strikeout rate remained good, entering the year with a 3.64 ERA and a 4.33 FIP. His 2024 campaign is even better as he released a 3.24 ERA and 4.14 FIP in his 58 1/3 innings work, and his walking speed is more manageable at an 8.5% range. Alcala’s .369 BABIP allows, and 52.6% stock rate will certainly increase in a larger sample size, and if the Red Sox can help recover his orders, it’s not even hard to see that they make him a viable option for even the middle innings that set up characters.
And more.
