Odyssey S2S Tri-Hot Putters Make Zero-Torque Technology Natural

Odyssey is targeting one of those “zero torque” hurdles with its latest Square 2 Square version.
The popular putting method has exploded in popularity over the past few years, but many players still shy away from the typical center shaft and launch design due to unfamiliarity.
But in the new S2S Tri-Hot series, Odyssey took the shaft axis and moved it forward, bringing the shaft closer to the leading edge of the putter but still passing through the putter’s center of gravity, giving it a toe-in characteristic.
In addition to the new configuration, the putter features the new Ai-Dual insert, the next generation of Callaway’s Ai-designed face insert introduced two years ago with the Ai-One series.
Read on below to learn more about the new S2S Tri-Hot putter series and what I think of the new versions.
What is the Odyssey S2S Tri-Hot putter?
The new S2S Tri-Hot putter features a new red and black color scheme that is immediately visible on the greens, which harkens back to the brand’s colors.
“As we say in the building, our product has to be ‘DSPD,'” Jacob Davidson, Callaway’s vice president of product strategy, told GOLF. “It’s obviously superior and pleasantly different.” We wanted red and black – that would be something visible on TV – that would be true to the Odyssey. “

These putters are available in three different popular Odyssey head shapes—No. 7, Rossie and Jailbird, the latter also available in a 38-inch Cruiser configuration—but the next thing you’ll notice is their front-axle position compared to other low-torque putter options.
Davidson said this allows the putter to play without shaft lean, which has been one of the roadblocks for many players using low-torque putters. Now you can use a low-torque putter but keep your hands in a traditional position.
To achieve this, the Odyssey reintroduces the Tri-Hot name with a three-piece construction, using over 140 grams of tungsten in the front of the putter and lightweight aluminum in the rear. The insert and tungsten are covered by a steel body to which the shaft is attached.
The putter also features the new Ai-Dual insert, which is engineered with artificial intelligence and features a dual-layer polyurethane insert with a soft outer layer and a strong inner layer. The grooves have also been redesigned with a more aggressive 19° slope.

To complete the build, Odyssey also introduced a new, heavier, stiffer SL120 shaft based on player feedback, as well as a new Pistol Plus Grip that was developed when Odyssey noticed players were overwhelmingly using larger-sized grips.
Who is the Osyssey S2S Tri-Hot putter suitable for?
This is a common theme with low-torque putters recently released, but the S2S Tri-Hot putter will be great for players who want to use a low-torque putter but are hesitant due to its unconventional characteristics.
While it’s still a mid-shaft putter, the new Tri-Hot looks more like a regular putter at address, with the shaft closer to the face (still having a bit of a launch point) and hitting the ball like a regular putter.
It also feels a little more responsive than the original Ai-One insert.

My thoughts!
There was a lot of hype when the S2S Tri-Hots first appeared on the Pro Tour a few weeks ago, and after rolling the putter myself, I got it
As someone who isn’t traditionally a fan of mallets, I was attracted to the minimal shape, Rossie, and I found that I didn’t need to make any adjustments to my setup like I would with other low-torque putters. I don’t adjust my hand position or forward pressure, and I don’t need to hit the ball that far.
The larger grip also works well on low-torque putters, helping someone like me who has years of muscle memory to release my toes, quieting my hands and allowing the putter to stay square naturally. I’m glad to see Odyssey simply put the type of grip on the putter that people use.

I’ve never really been a fan of synthetic inserts as they have a plasticky feel and sound and seem cheap to me. This one is different because it retains the soft feel I love, but is more responsive. Also, the new grooves seem to create a nice rolling effect indoors (I haven’t had a chance to test it outside yet). The price point ($550) may be surprising for an Odyssey putter, but this putter does have a premium feel.
In the end, I think there’s still a lot to build on in this version. In my interview with Davidson, I pointed out that the fronts of the three different models are very similar. In theory, it seems like you could create new backplates and create a variety of different shapes from the platform.

Odyssey Tri-Hot Square 2 Square #7 Custom Putter
We’ve got zero torque going forward. Odyssey’s new S2S TRI-HOT putter series is a revolution in the “zero torque” category. By using a multi-material construction, we are able to move the center of gravity of these putters far enough forward to allow the shaft to enter the clubhead on the top line, eliminating the need for a shaft lean, thus eliminating one of the biggest barriers to entry for this style of putter. Forward CG and Hosel Position By moving the CG forward, we are able to position the hosel locating pin on the top line, closer to the face than a typical “zero torque” putter, resulting in a more natural, intuitive and comfortable mounting position. MULTI-MATERIAL CONSTRUCTION By strategically using aluminum, steel and over 140 grams of tungsten, we’ve been able to design a “zero torque” putter that places more than 80% of its weight below the top line and allows us to have a forward center of gravity and socket position. New FRD Grooves This new forward roll design has deeper, more aggressive grooves. It features a 19° slope, which works in conjunction with the dual-layer design to improve forward roll of the face.
