Deni Avdija has blossomed into a legitimate go-to scorer, giving Trail Blazers fans a new star to assemble earlier than expected. They’re still learning how to close out games and protect leads, but their energy and defense suggest this won’t be a typical down year.

It’s been a brutal opening month for the Kings, with their defense getting shredded and their offense no longer having enough power to compensate. There has been talk of larger structural changes, which is a worrying sign for a team now built to win.

The Clippers’ age and injury risk soon caught up with them, with a long losing streak and long-term absences of key stars. Even if Kawhi Leonard is available, the roster no longer looks deep or dynamic enough to seriously scare the West’s top teams.

LaMelo Ball’s recent absence puts the Hornets back in the lottery, despite rookie Con Knuupel showing plenty of star potential. They were competitive against the rush, but defensive issues and a lack of veteran stability turned a promising night into a bust.

Brooklyn is last in the Eastern Conference, has one of the ugliest point differentials in the league, and has an unstoppable defense. The silver lining is that their young wings are getting real reps, but right now this is looking more like a long-term project than a quick reset.

The Pacers have been decimated by injuries, with Tyrese Haliburton’s Achilles issues making headlines for a brutal start. Without their attacking engine, they dropped to the bottom of the table and rarely looked competitive for 48 minutes.
