Kevin Durant does not expect to get the biggest contract from the Rockets
Kevin Durant’s highest contract was reportedly extended by two years to a maximum of $122 million after the Houston Rockets are expected to trade for the Future Hall of Fame this summer.
ESPN’s Tim Macmahon reported on the Hoop Collective Podcast: “The Rockets can’t go all out, and what I’ve heard is that they won’t go all out.
“Now, it doesn’t mean it won’t happen, but there’s a rumble KD won’t push all the biggest push. I don’t know the Rockets will put any table close to the biggest on the table. I don’t think the Rockets are ideal – but I don’t think they’re just on the same contract with Kevin Durant, just seasonally, he’s just in the race, just on the top.”
Rockets win Kevin Durant for historic seven teams trade
Houston received Durant from Phoenix on July 6, part of a historic seven-team trade, sending headlines for Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks.
Durant turned 37 in September and his 2025-26 campaign hit a $54.7 million cap, the final season of his four-year contract signed as a member of the Brooklyn Nets in 2021.
While the Rockets are still able to expand Durant at any time and prevent him from meeting unrestricted free agents in 2026, they may not be willing to offer him the highest contract.
The 36-year-old should consider Houston’s decision, and the imminent possibility of jumping into a second apron may be considered.
If Durant receives a two-year extension, first-year salary of $57.4 million, and forward Tari Eason also signs a rookie extension, the Rockets will be the second season in the 2026-27 season, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.
Durant wants to retire in Houston
However, Houston could decide that it was necessary to make Durant happy.
