Doane, Thompson lead Sabers to 4-3 overtime win over Oilers – Hockey Writer – Buffalo Sabers

The Edmonton Oilers (13-11-6) host the Buffalo Sabers (12-14-4) on Tuesday (Dec. 9) in their final game of the season. In their last game on November 17, the Sabers defeated the Oilers 5-1. They also won this game, defeating the Oilers 4-3 in overtime. This is your game review.

The visiting team took the lead with 59 seconds left in the first quarter. Rasmus Dahlin’s wrist shot was diverted in front by Josh Doan under the gloves of goalie Stuart Skinner for his ninth goal of the season. The Sabers entered the locker room with a lead, Edmonton holding a slim 8-7 lead. Sabres goalie Colten Ellis got a scare when he was knocked over by David Tomasek near the end of the first period. The netminder left the game and did not return, being replaced by Alex Lyon.

Buffalo thought it was 2-0, but the Oilers successfully challenged a missed timeout due to a hand pass and kept the score within one point. However, Buffalo responded immediately with 11:03 left in the middle frame. Tachi Thompson stole the puck from Evan Bouchard behind the net and he made no mistakes in the press. Then, less than a minute later, Doan scored his second goal of the game on the power play. Thompson found Doan low and got between the legs, beating Skinner on the glove side. Buffalo entered the locker room with a lead, a 14-10 shooting advantage in this quarter, and a total score of 21-18.

Just 10 seconds into the third quarter, the Oilers were on the board. Connor McDavid’s effort shot past Lyon and beat the sprawling goalkeeper. Subsequently, Edmonton only scored one goal at 1 minute and 56 seconds into the final game. Leon Draisaitl put the puck in the net and Vasily Podkolzin won a battle in front. Podkolzin found the rebound and scored three times on the loose puck before beating Lyon on the rebound.

After marching to the end zone, the Oilers tied the game with an extra offensive player with one second left. In the early scramble, the puck landed on McDavid’s tape and he buried it, sending the game into overtime.

But Buffalo didn’t let the comeback get in their way, taking the victory just 33 seconds into overtime. Alex Tuch was alone in front on a pass from Ryan McLeod and he beat Skinner’s short side to finish the game.
