Opening Game: General Manager Meeting, MVP, Additional Awards

Don’t forget to enter MLBTR’s annual free agent prediction contest! Submission deadline is Tonight at 11pm Central Time. Without further ado, here are three things we’ll be watching today in baseball:

1. End of general manager meeting:

Today is the last day of general manager meetings, but the league’s 30 front-office leaders still have time to fuel rumors before leaving Las Vegas. While there have been some minor trades, for the most part, general manager meetings have been about laying the groundwork and providing hints on the directions some clubs may take this winter (like the Buccaneers potentially expanding their payroll capacity). We’ve also seen comments from general managers downplaying their interest in trading speculative trade candidates (such as Dana Brown’s Isaac Paredes). There’s still the potential for noteworthy trades or signings to occur before the general manager meeting ends, but the focus will likely be on what may change in the coming days as the qualifying offer decision expires and the non-tender deadline approaches. More hot-stove activity is expected at next month’s Winter Meetings.

2. 2025 MVP crowning:

As awards week comes to an end, this year’s MVP award winners for both leagues will be announced tonight. There is little plot in NL; Shohei Ohtani Despite the performances of the other finalists, he was widely expected to win his fourth career MVP trophy. Kyle Schwarber and Juan Soto. A season-long battle this year in the American League Aaron Judge and Carl Rowley will eventually end with Jose Ramirez He joined the duo in the finals after posting his second straight 30-homer, 40-steal season. Whether Judge’s otherworldly offensive numbers are enough to overcome Raleigh’s 60 homers and status as a quality defender at the game’s most difficult defensive position will be revealed at 6 p.m. CT.

3. Additional awards announced:

While the main event of the night was the announcement of the Most Valuable Player, that wasn’t the only award announced throughout the day. The 2025 MLB All-Pro team will be announced today at the GM meeting, along with the Comeback Player of the Year, Reliever of the Year, Outstanding DH, Executive of the Year and Hank Aaron Awards will also be announced. Results for all of these awards will be announced tonight during the MLB Network Awards Ceremony, which will take place from 8 pm to 10 pm CT. According to MLB.com, more than 70 current and former MLB players are expected to attend the show.
