It’s September! This means two things: the school is back to the conference and the Ryder Cup is coming. In just a few short weeks, Farmingdale, New York, will be the center of the golf world as more than a dozen Americans compete with their European counterparts on two years of bragging rights.
The Ryder Cup is always a must-see TV, but the plot is at a long history level as the legendary Muni Bethpage Black competes for this year’s match, and people are looking forward to having a fever.
Unlike the exclusive scope of Augusta Country or Cypress Point, Bethpage Black is open to the public – as long as you are willing to work during tee time or sacrifice a little sleep in the parking lot. This accessibility will only increase interest in the event this month, as weekend warriors everywhere will keep an eye on how professionals attack the People’s Country Club.
Black courses have long been one of the toughest tests in the golf test. While professionals will undoubtedly take up their birds, don’t be fooled – it’s still difficult.
So, what makes Bethpage Black so hard? In a word: length.
From the tip, the route extends to nearly 7,400 yards – for the Ryder Cup, it may be a little longer. If you want to lower the black, it’s better to bring the driver… and backup.
For most casual golfers, many fairways cannot be far. According to Shot Scope data, the average driving distance for a typical golfer is 204 yards, which means seven fairways – holes 5, 9, 10, 12, 13, 13, 16 and 18 – cannot reach out from the tee. All other pars except the 13 are 4, but for every day golfers they play more like 5.
It’s not just a 4-shot 4-shot person that’s intimidating. 3-3-size 230 yards – untouchable for most casual players who need solid drivers and chips to find green.
While the scorecard lists Bethpage Black as a 70-shot, playing it from Tips would be more like an average player’s 80-shot.
