Fedorov jersey drama, Lucic PTO and more NHL rumors – Hockey writer – St. Louis Bruce

Amid today’s NHL rumor, the Detroit Red Wing announced that it would retire No. 91 and put Sergei Fedorov’s jersey in the aftermath. Then why is the controversy? Meanwhile, the former NHLER, which has recovered the NHL, is on trial with St. Louis Blues. Finally, are the Edmonton Oilers and the Boston Brown Bears engaged in potential trade?

Red Wings finally commemorate Sergei Fedorov with No. 91 retirement

The Detroit Red Wings announced Tuesday that they will retire Sergei Fedorov’s No. 91 jersey on January 12, 2026. The news comes a few years after he last played for the team, after officially hanging up the skates for permanently. Fedorov played for Wings from 1990 to 2003, scoring 954 points (400 goals, 554 assists) in 908 games.

Despite helping the team win three Stanley Cups, there are questions about whether the Red Wings will give him the honor. He had a contract dispute with the team, eventually in a 1998 offer with the Carolina Hurricane and finally set off for the Anaheim Ducks in 2003. The organization’s pain has been reportedly continuing.

Things have obviously changed, and CEO Chris Ilitch calls Fedorov the “perfect manifestation” of Red Wings. The timing that matches Detroit’s centenary season makes it one of its most talented and influential players.

Milan Lucic gets PTO with Blues

St. Louis Bruce confirmed on Tuesday that veteran winger Milan Lucici will participate in training camps of the Professional Trial Agreement (PTO). It’s a surprising announcement as Lucici hasn’t made a comeback within anyone’s reaching the 2025-26 NHL season.

Lucich parked in Boston, Edmonton, Calgary and Los Angeles. He left the NHL to enter the NHL player’s assistance program after accusing spousal abuse. He has since been restored, and the Blues may have worked hard with former GM Peter Chiarelli.

Whether Lucich is left in the tank remains to be seen. His final seasons in the NHL were basically going well. For St. Louis, the PTO represents a low-risk bet to see if he can offer something in the next six characters.

Brown bears and oilers are talking about winger trade?

Hockey analyst Dominic Tiano said there were rumors that the Boston Browns might be exploring a trade involving former first-round pick Fabian Lysell, which could send a fast winger to the Edmonton Oilers. According to David Staples of Edmonton Magazine:

“Rumors hanging the bears in a deal with the Edmonton Oilers may be hanging lysell… Dominic Tiano suggests in my Discord (digital chat), the Brown Bear and the Oilers are already in the conversation.”

Lysell, who was once regarded as a rare offensive talent for the Brown Bears in his first 2021 pick, is known for his outstanding speed, elite players and top 6 potential. However, after three seasons in the AHL, his development has stalled and his view output has dropped.

While Boston may see the value of relocation of Lessell as he enters the final year of his entry-level contract, it is unclear whether Edmonton has a clear role for him. The Oilers already have a stock of smaller, skilled forwards, including new arrivals Ike Howard and Matt Savoie, complicating the direct exchange. Trade possibilities may involve other prospects, such as goalkeeper Michael Dipietro, to balance the deal. Lysell still has the tools to succeed, but questions about his defensive game, consistency and aligning with Edmonton’s roster.
