The 2025 US Open is open and run, and the first day of the game released many surprises. JJ Spaun led by four-pointers, Scottie Scheffler was seven shots away, and Brooks Koepka was in it in another U.S. Open.
What are the shops for round 2? Here are five things you know in Oakmont on Friday.
What do we expect from Rory?
Rory McIlroy’s Thursday is the story of a two-round match: the back nine (his opening hole) was in 33 (his opening hole), who was 41 in Game 29 at 41. McIlroy eventually signed 74 points. What went wrong? McIlroy didn’t speak. He refused to talk to the media after a loop.
Good news for McIlroy: He is not alone. He is still sitting in the first half of the rankings, and a good round on Friday could make him re-competitive immediately.

Bogey-free day at JJ Spaun
One player shone as Oakmont dug his mighty claws to most of the field on Thursday. JJ Spaun has only 66 shots, four birdies and zero bogeys, and is surrounded by beasts on the beast route. Did we mention that this is only his second time in the US public appearance once?
The 34-year-old first-round leader was the best year of his career, after finishing second in cognitive classics and player titles. He has proven himself to hang in the best possible situation. Under the pressure of heavy training, can he play three more rounds?
Scotty on vacation
Scottie Scheffler often compares to the game’s Goats, Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus, and the leadership of this game is no exception. He is a favorite of a country mile. So when Schaffler opened three rounds on Thursday’s three-thirds of the game, he received some Tiger-style treatment: what, what, What? Why is the world ranked number one?
Expectations for Scheffler are high, just like those of big cats. But only seven shots defender, Schefler will never get out of this game. The only thing that was forgotten was that Schefler trailed Jhonnatan Vegas by five shots in the first round of the PGA Championship, ending up winning five games in five games.
Brooks Koepka is back
We should be better than the guy who underestimated his resume with five major champions, but it’s still a new surprise to see Brooks Koepka near the top of the rankings in the big championship game.

Koepka has never won a professional tournament since the 2023 PGA Championship – not long ago! – But he has definitely been Meh in professional competitions since then. He missed this year’s Masters and PGA layoffs, his best result since winning the T17 at the 2023 U.S. Open.

Defending champion
Bryson DeChambeau entered a lot of hype this week: he was the defending U.S. Open champion and finished T5 and T2 in this year’s Masters and U.S. Open respectively.
But like many of his highest ranking peers, DeChambeau had more bogeys than the Birds on Thursday, signing three rounds on par. Like McIlroy and Scheffler, he certainly didn’t compete in three rounds. But Friday will be a big day to locate into the weekend – for Dechambeau and everyone else.
