Canucks News & Rumors: Hughes, Kane, Prices for Training Camps, and more – Hockey Writer – Vancouver Canucks

In this version of Canucks news and rumors in Vancouver, Quinn Hughes is his future since President Jim Rutherford’s infamous press conference. Meanwhile, Evander Kane drew Elias Pettersson and talked about the potential to play alongside him this season. Finally, more details about Penticton Training Camp, including high fares and the always-anticipated date of the blue vs. white melee.
Quinn Hughes doesn’t have to worry about his future in Vancouver now
The two biggest stories of this offseason focus on Connor McDavid and Quinn Hughes. The uncertainty of the future in their respective cities has caused a lot of clicks and rampant speculation. Will McDavid and Hughes wear different jerseys in the future? It has been in the minds of Garnerx fans since Jack and Luke drafted it, but it has been at the forefront since Rutherford mentioned it to the media, with the possibility of joining his brothers in New Jersey when his current contract expires in 2027.
“It probably doesn’t boil down to money [Quinn]. He said before he wanted to play with his brothers. This will be partially out of control…” Rutherford said.
Since that press, there have been a lot of articles talking about whether the Garners can re-sign their captain before that. There are even speculations that if they don’t play the playoffs this season, they can trade the Devil before the 2027 trade deadline or the next offseason.
At that time, the Canucks had already withdrawn from the media, so Quinn was not immediately asked. Instead, fans were left to read and listen to all speculation and rumors, without any comments from the man himself…until now. Unfortunately, when he spoke to Sportsnet’s Ian MacIntyre on Friday (September 5), he didn’t say anything to calm his worries.
“I’m really good at it – still very good at it – I’m very present. I can’t even sign for a year, so I can do nothing. Just as the noise (about his future), I can handle the noise. That’s why I’m the captain of the team because I can handle these things and I can play at the elite level and there’s no relationship around.”
Later in the interview, Hughes basically left his potential, signing a long-term extension until his season with the Karnaks.
“Every year comes with different challenges,” he said. “My two best partners (Kanak teammates Connor Garland and Brock Boothle) just signed in Vancouver. I’ll sign for a long time. I’ll say last year wasn’t fun; but it’s not. But I’m a very competitive guy… Last year was a failure, so I’m trying to take my best leader. To be a great leader.
Hopefully Hughes’ future will not be a distraction to the team this season. He may be able to handle the noise, but the rest of the roster is another story. I think the best thing the Garners can do is win, and hopefully that’s enough to make him work hard in two years to what everyone seems to think of as a greener ranch in New Jersey.
Evander Kane Talks About Possible Playing with Elias Pettersson
Another big offseason story is about Elias Pettersson. He has been known to have been training hard and hopes to “take revenge” during his poor career-season held in 2024-25. He may have a new winger to help him do that in Evander Kane, who talked about the possibility of queuing with Canucks Star this season after informal skateboarding at UBC on Wednesday (September 3).
“You obviously want to play as many of the best players as possible,” Kane said. “I expect this may happen at some point. It will be about using our skills to build as much chemistry and success as possible” (excerpted from ‘Canucks: Evander Kane pumps Elias Pettersson’s tires,’ Province9/4/25).
After skating with Pettersson on Wednesday, Kane also added that he and his “new look” and “slightly different attitudes”. He praised himself for his speed and ability to handle the puck in neutral areas and compared him to other players he has played.
“I’ve played with a few similar people in my career and I think it’s important to help them create space through a hurry neutral area while making their attributes better. Open up, find the right place to get the puck and read the book.”
Pettersson hasn’t had a player like Kane before, a winger who can create space with his body and body. Not to mention, Kane doesn’t allow any extra shots or dirty hits to escape from the opposition, which wasn’t always the case in the past. It would be interesting to see their chemistry in the preseason, as he might be one of the reasons Pettersson returns to the elite form he showed when he reached the century score in 2022-23.
The price of training camps reveals…and they are not cheap
Canucks bootcamp will begin on September 18 in Penticton, and unfortunately, tickets are not cheap. The team announced Thursday (September 4) that while participating in practice will be relatively budget-friendly Thursday and Friday (September 18 and 19), and $6.50 on Sunday (September 21), the always-popular blue vs. white melee on Saturday (September 20) will be $40. There was a time when they were toasts for the league in 2010 and 2011, they didn’t spend any money.

Just two years ago, it was free to participate in practice, and the game was only $5, and the proceeds would go to charity. Last year, the conventional price jumped to $10, while the warfare ticket was $32, and there was no indication where the money went. The recent announcement has been criticized by analysts and fans, and it’s interesting to see what the latest price increases are still called “price fraud” that can affect attendance, especially after a very disappointing and frustrating season.
Preseason is coming
Whether fans attend training camp or not, the preseason should have a lot of interest when it takes place in Seattle on September 21. The full schedule will be held on September 24, with the Canucks greeting the Calgary Flames again on September 26, dating the Edmonton Oilers and the Edmonton Oilers and the Flames on September 1 respectively, and playing against the Oilers at home on October 3. They will then start the regular season schedule a few days after October 9 against the Flames.
