Wimbledon 2025: Why are there pineapples on men’s trophy?

Pineapple is believed to be on the top of Wimbledon men’s singles trophy because of the rare nature of the fruit that makes it a status symbol.
The Wimbledon Championship began in 1877, and in the second half of the 19th century, pineapples were regarded as exclusive fruit, although brought back to Europe by Christopher Columbus about 400 years ago.
In the early 1900s, Hawaiian pineapples were first produced commercially for import and growth in Western Europe.
Therefore, the portion size of pineapple is considered to be a higher status.
The current men’s singles trophy, including pineapple, is the third iteration of the trophy.
The trophy is made of silver and gold plated and is 18 inches (46 cm) tall.
Since 1877, every winner of the men’s singles trophy has been Spencer Gore, engraved on the trophy.
Since 1949, all winners have also received replicas of the trophy.
