Indiana Pacers sign Cameron Payne to training camp contract

In Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals, Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton tore his Achilles tendon. Not only is this a devastating injury for Haliburton, but it happens later in the year. Haliburton will miss the entire 2025-26 season due to recovery time constraints from a torn Achilles tendon.
With that, Andre Nembhard will be playing point guard for the Pacers this year. TJ McConnell comes off the bench. Indiana also has Quinton Jackson and Ray J. Dennis as depth pieces. On Tuesday, October 9, the Pacers announced that they would sign a veteran point guard to a training camp contract. Cameron Payne will have a chance to play for the Pacers at some point during the 2025-26 season.

The Pacers waived guard Delon Wright in order to sign Cameron Payne. They were teammates on the New York Knicks last season. Cameron Payne will play in 72 games and make five starts in the 2024-25 season. He averaged 6.9 points, 1.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. The 31-year-old was one of the top free agents still on the market before being signed by the Pacers. Payne joined Indiana through a training camp agreement.
Training camp contracts typically last one year and are not fully guaranteed. Additionally, they are usually Chart 10 trades. This allows the team to bring in players to compete in the G League. If they continue to impress, the contract could be converted to a two-way contract or even a standard contract. This is the path Cameron Payne takes with the Pacers in 2025-26. The Pacers have three preseason games left for Payne to prove his worth.

His first opportunity will come on Saturday, October 11th when the Pacers take on the Thunder. In order to sign Cameron Payne, the Pacers had to give up Delon Wright. He suffered a serious head-to-head collision in Indiana’s first preseason game. Wright was forced to exit the game early and did not return. Now, Cameron Payne will have a chance to compete with the Pacers for a roster spot.
All three of Indiana’s two-way contracts are currently active. In fact, two of them are point guards on the Pacers roster. Among them are Quinton Jackson and Ray J. Dennis. Additionally, Tyrone Peters has a two-way deal with Indiana. If Cameron Payne proves he can help the team win, one of those players could lose his two-way contract with the veteran point guard. We’ll have to wait and see how the Pacers fare this season.
