PJ Washington agrees to four-year, $90 million extension with Dallas

The 2024-25 season is a roller coaster for the Dallas Mavericks. General Manager Nico Harrison traded All-Pro PG Luka Doncic to the Lakers. Dallas ended 39-43 and did not make the playoffs.
Despite the loss of Doncic, the Mavericks still have a lot of talent on the roster. On paper, they have one of the top frontcourt units by 2025-26. The frontcourt in Dallas is PF PJ Washington. On Wednesday, NBA insiders announced that Washington agreed to a four-year, $90 million extension with the Mavericks. He has signed a contract between 2029-30.

In the 2019 NBA Draft, the Hornets chose PJ Washington from Kentucky with the 12th overall pick. The 27-year-old spent the first five and a half years of his career in Charlotte. Washington played 304 games and scored 236 games for the Hornets. On the 2023-24 deadline, Dallas traded Grant Williams, Seth Curry and won the first-round pick in 2027 in exchange for PJ Washington.
Upon arriving in Dallas, Washington has been a full-time starter for the Mavericks. He founded 84 of his 86 games for the team. Washington averaged 13.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per game. According to ESPN Research, Washington was one of eight players on average per game last season. On Wednesday, September 3, NBA insiders announced that PJ Washington signed a four-year, $90 million extension. PF has one year left for the transaction and has been signed for a long time now. Additionally, Washington is now eligible for trade in the 2025-26 season. Going into next season, it will be fun to see Dallas’ starting lineup.
The team will not have PG Kyrie Irving is about to begin. Dallas signed D’Angelo Russell and Dante Exum to fill Irving until he returns. Cooper Flagg and Anthony Davis are undoubtedly starters. The money Dallas brings to Washington feels like he will be the starter too. There are reports around the league that Flag could start with the Mavericks this year. That would make Washington the SF, the Davis of PF, and Derrick Lively in the center. This is four of five players in the starting lineup who are six feet or higher.
