Vancouver Canucks sign David Kämpf to one-year contract – The Hockey Writers – NHL News

David Kempf’s drama is finally over. The 30-year-old center became a free agent after his contract was terminated by the Toronto Maple Leafs after he failed to report to the American Hockey League (AHL) roster. The Vancouver Canucks swooped in and claimed his rights – he signed a one-year, $1.1 million contract on Saturday, November 15th.

The injury-plagued Canucks need depth, so this signing makes sense. Kampf is a free throw specialist who has proven to be an adequate bottom-six forward at five-on-five. His underlying numbers in Toronto don’t jump off the page, but he does occasionally show up on the scoresheet: 31 goals and 54 assists in 301 games, averaging 14:15 a night.

At this stage, Vancouver just needs NHL-proven bodies to fill the bottom six spots. Kempf did that even as he looked outside for the Maple Leafs. Who knows, he might be able to revive his career at B.C.
