Jannik Sinner is one set away from making ATP Masters 1000 history at the Miami Open hosted by Itau.

The PIF ATP No. 2 beat Damir Zuhur 6-3, 6-3 in the first round at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday, tying Novak Djokovic for the most consecutive set wins (24) at the Masters 1000 level. Although all the ATP Tour icons have competed in the Masters 1000 since the category was created in 1990, the 24-year-old Sinner is still on the verge of creating an unparalleled winning streak.

Sinner’s flawless run at the Masters 1000 began with victory at the Rolex Paris Masters in November, during which he lost an average of more than three games per set and recorded four wins against top-10 opponents. The Italian won the title in France without dropping a set, a feat he repeated at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells earlier this month. Now he has a chance to leapfrog Djokovic by winning the first set in his third-round match in Miami against No. 30 seed Corentin Moutei.

Like Sinner’s streak to date, Djokovic’s perfect 24-set record at the start of 2016 also earned him two trophies. Djokovic, then world No. 1, began his record run with a second-round comeback victory over Bjorn Fratangelo in Indian Wells and won the trophy without dropping another set. He then completed the “Sunshine Double” in Miami (a record fourth), where he did not lose a set. The Serb’s stunning dominance ended in his first match at that year’s Rolex Monte Carlo Masters, when he lost 4-6, 6-2, 4-6 to Jiri Veseli.

The BNP Paribas Open’s hard courts also have the third- and fourth-longest winning streaks on the list. Carlos Alcaraz cruised to victory at Indian Wells in 2023 with a perfect performance and extended his set streak to 21 until Sinner rallied to defeat the Spaniard in the Miami final. In 2014, Djokovic’s 19-set winning streak came to an end in 2014 when he won the Paris-Bercy title with a flawless performance the year before when Roger Federer took the first set in the Indian Wells final. Nonetheless, Djokovic turned the match around and claimed the trophy in the California desert.

The longest winning streak of 1,000 sets at the Masters on clay is Andy Murray’s performance in 2016: the Englishman won 18 consecutive matches at the Inter Milan Stadium in Rome and did so without dropping a set in the match. In his next Masters 1000 event, on the hard courts of the Cincinnati Open, Murray won again in straight sets before losing to Marin Cilic in the championship match.
