Although there are few games, golf has proven time and time again to be a very exciting game. This is a sport that challenges one’s own psychological strength and physical skills. Some golfers may struggle with bringing opponents in it, but others are in trouble. Bethpage Black’s Ryder Cup brings professional lows and heroic moments to some of the world’s greatest players.
The players’ love for the country is a key theme in the Ryder Cup, and it’s also the main tenant driving the Simpsons Cup, another enthusiastic match of the week.
The Simpson Cup is the annual championship between the injured military and veterans teams in the United States and the United Kingdom. Just like the Ryder Cup, players on both teams took a year to advance to their team.
“It’s the cream of the crop,” said Mike Browne, a scratch golfer Mike Browne who lost his left leg in the 29 commando of the British Army. “It means a lot to many of us, it’s amazing.”
Some players on the Simpson Cup are amputators, usually the result of an IED or mortar explosion while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. Many veterans deal with severe depression or PTSD. But they all see golf as a lifeline, which is an important part of their recovery, both mentally and physically.
“We all have special bonds in golf and the military,” said Chad Pfeifer, U.S. Army SPC. “It brings everyone together; the Simpsons Cup is one of the best events.”
This year, the match team and GB team held a four-ball match at Prince’s Golf Club in Kent, England and a four-ball match at Prince’s Golf Club in England and a singles match next door to legendary Royal St. George’s.
In 2024, the Simpson Cup landed on the wires in Shinnecock Hills. After the Americans led 4-2 in four goals, Britain’s strong efforts forced a 9.5-9.5 draw. The entire series was stalemate 6-6, with the last two games ending with a tie. The event visited some of the greatest venues on the golf course: TPC Sawgrass, Congress, St Andrews, Balton Slohl and Royal Burkedale, to name just a few.
Competitors participating in the Simpson Cup are all members of the On Course Foundation, which will help veterans in the U.S. and UK golf industries get injured.
This year’s competition will be held on Tuesday, September 30 and Wednesday, October 1. You can do it online or on social media with the 2025 Simpson Cup.
