Wake Forest Basketball Name Steve Winmann’s new general manager

Wake Forest Athletics announced Thursday that Steve Weinman, who spent the last 13 years at the front desk of the Chicago Bulls, has been appointed senior athletics director.

In this position, Winman will also serve as general manager of the men’s and women’s basketball program, providing direct strategic and operational support to coaches Steve Forbes and Megan Gebbia.

“From the moment I started consulting with Wake Forest this spring, it was a pleasure to work with two basketball coaching staff who have always welcomed me very much and how they view the game, both in terms of roster building and game strategy,” Weinman said in a statement.

“I am very grateful to both staff, Dean Annette Ranft and Deputy Director of Track and Field John Currie and the Athletics Administration, who provided the opportunity to solve the puzzle together to support putting our student-athletes in the best position to succeed.”

Weinman, a 2010 graduate of the University of Missouri, joined Wake Forest employee after most recently serving as Vice President of Basketball Strategy and Vice President of Analytics and Assistant General Manager of Analytics.

Wenman will serve as executive member of the Business School

Weinman, who serves as general manager of the Wake Forest basketball program, will work with the head coach of each program, including recruitment strategy, transfer portal assessment, resource allocation and planning.

Winman will also work directly with basketball student-athletes representatives.

Additionally, according to the press release, Weinman will serve as an executive member of Wake Forest Business School, establishing and managing formal partnerships to “develop analytics concentration” in the Business Analysis (MSBA) program.

“This partnership between the track and field and business school reflects Wake Forest’s deep commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation,” said President Susan R. Wente.

“By bringing together the expertise of experienced NBA executives with the academic strength of our business and analytics programs, we are creating new avenues for student engagement, competitive excellence and national leadership in national track and field.”

Winman will also be responsible for creating an “integrated vision” for the analytics and business intelligence structure of the new Wake Forest Athletics to support all 18 Wake Forest track and field programs, operations and revenue units.

The data infrastructure will provide Wake Forest with all head coaches and unit leaders, able to leverage “resources and talents on campus to model, report, decision-making and performance strategies.”

During his tenure with the Bulls, Winman led the organization’s basketball analytics division, providing data-driven insights to support reconnaissance, drafting, game preparation and trade analysis.

He also serves as internal powers for the team, involving salary caps and collective bargaining agreements.

Prior to joining the Bulls, Winman worked in the NBA Corporate Office in New York, where he provided advanced analytical and statistical modeling for the league and the then-Goal League (now the G League).
