Victoria Mboko

Wildcard Victoria Mboko won her first WTA title by defeating four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka from behind in the Canadian Open final.

In the second straight game, the 18-year-old Canadian had to show resilience after admitting to the opening ceremony, but the rally won 2-6 6-4 6-1.

Mboko is ranked 333rd in the world but is expected to rise to 34 after the victory has won her home crowd.

“I’m so happy to be in Montreal for the first time. I just remember feeling nervous, but did what I could,” Mboko said.

“When I won the first round, I was so happy and super satisfied. I never thought I would make it to the finals, let alone win the game.

“I have a lot of emotions in my mind that I can’t even express.”

Mboko defeated four Grand Slam titles on her way to collect the championship in front of an audience of 11,000.
