He continued: “I was just trying to start to be sober. From 11:30 I wasn’t used to it, so my first goal was to be good, focused, energetic, and well-tempoed.
“I started well, pushed him to the limit and tried to play long rally. I played great tennis and I was very proud of it.”
Alcaraz received treatment for his right knee and quadriceps as he led 5-4 in the second set, but later he said the discomfort quickly disappeared and he was “not worried”.
He said: “I feel good. I ask for physiology because when he breaks my serving time, at the last point, I just feel like something that doesn’t work well on my knees.
“After five to six points, it disappeared.”
After the medical timeout, Alcaraz broke into two matches in the next match to move both settings before quickly rattled in the third set to finish the victory.
Alcaraz won his first major in the U.S. Open as a teenager in 2022, with his goal to win his second major after retaining the French Open in June.
If he plays with Jannik Sinner in New York or better, he will return to the world rankings.
His fourth round opponent will be seedless Arthur Rinderknech, who entered the final 16 games of the Grand Slam for the first time in his career.
The 82nd World Ranking recovered from losing the first set defeat to Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi 4-6 6-3 6-3 6-2.
