US Open 2025: Francesca Jones prepares for the first New York master draw

Jones was entrenched in New York for a three-round qualifying match in New York, so he was eager to call parents Adele and Simon, who returned to England.

Why don’t they see their daughter in person? Because they can’t find the dog.

“My parents aren’t traveling with me, so I made sure I can share these moments with them as soon as possible,” Jones told BBC Sport after blocking her position in the major draw in New York.

“Considering how much they sacrificed to give me the opportunity, I hope they can feel as much as possible.

“They are not here because there are dogs without dogs – the dogs come first!”

Jones is born with a genetic condition, which means she has three fingers and a thumb on each hand, three toes on her right foot and four toes on her left.

The doctor told the Yorkshire-born player that he forgot about playing tennis professionally – but she beat Spain as a teenager with odds after the odds.

Learning her craft on clay was a different path from many British people, and the main draws she entered into the United States were often unconventional.

Jones is the number one seed in the women’s qualifying draw as the deadline for automatic entry has just been lowered.

“I always do different things – so why change now?” Jones said.
