Two prospects emerging from early 2026 NBA Draft conversations

Biliew is gaining momentum at Wake Forest University

The early stages of the 2025 college basketball season are giving scouts a clearer look at a variety of prospects, from elite freshmen to seasoned veterans. In the latter group, Wake Forest forward Omaha Billiu had his strongest performance of the year in the Demon Deacons’ win over UMass Lowell on Sunday.

Billiu made 4 of 4 shots, 3 of 3 three-pointers, and 2 of 2 from the free throw line, scoring 13 points and 4 rebounds. This is in stark contrast to his early-season averages of 3.3 points and 1.7 rebounds per game while shooting 17.6% from the field. The former five-star high school recruit, ranked No. 13 nationally in the class of 2023 by 247Sports, transferred to Wake Forest after one season at Iowa State.

During the 2024-25 season, Bilioux made 13 appearances, averaging only 9.5 minutes per game. However, his role has expanded this year and Sunday’s performance could mark the start of a more consistent period. At 6-foot-8, 230 pounds, he has the physical tools to gain traction as a draft prospect, but he’ll have to be consistent to reach NBA range.

LaVar’s strong start boosts his draft chances

Virginia Tech senior Toibu Lawal has been more consistent throughout his college career, and he continued that trend with another strong performance on Sunday. The London native had 18 points, 15 rebounds, one assist, three blocks and zero turnovers in a win over Charlotte to help the Hokies improve to a 4-0 record.

At 6-foot-8, 215 pounds, LaVar brings high-end athleticism and effort to the frontcourt. In four games, he averaged 14 points, 11.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocks while shooting 47.2% from the field. His 16.7 percent three-point shooting remains a weakness, but his defensive upside and rebounding ability provide him with a viable path to the next level.

what happens next

League play will provide a tougher evaluation environment for both players. Biliew needs to show consistency to re-enter the conversation he once occupied as a top-20 pick. At the same time, if LaVar continues to impact the game with his energy, rim protection and ability to finish inside, he positions himself as a possible second-round selection.

Both have now taken meaningful early steps toward appearing on the 2026 NBA Draft board.
