Maple Leafs suspend Kampf’s salary for leaving Toronto Marlies – Hockey Writer –

The saga of David Kampf has taken an interesting turn. The Toronto Maple Leafs decided to keep him without pay following his departure from the Toronto Marlies.
This is something NHL insider Elliott Friedman reported last week, and has been saying there’s a chance it could end with the contract being terminated. He said this on his podcast.
“I don’t know exactly what was said… but Kampf did keep players with the Marlies. [Leafs’ AHL affiliate] The impression was given that he was terminating the contract. “
Kempf’s contract could be terminated
According to Puckpedia, the Maple Leafs have suspended him, meaning they will no longer have a salary cap hit on him while he plays in the American Hockey League (AHL).
If that’s the case, they’ll save themselves $1.25 million this season and $1.75 million next season. They also said this could be resolved by terminating the contract or deal. If his contract is terminated, both teams will essentially walk away from the deal. The Maple Leafs will retain his entire contract, leaving Kampf free to sign elsewhere. This would give him the option to sign with another NHL team and try to make back some of the lost money.

If he is traded, that seems unlikely. The deal is to ship his contract out of town and get him off the books. Toronto may even have to offer a draft pick to go along with his trade.
It seems more likely that they will choose to terminate his contract and get out of this situation. This is not a situation many teams want for their organizations.
