Blue Jays hit the bomber in Game 2, but Trey Yesavage is the bigger story
The pitching match favors the Yankees. Amid respect from one of the best young weapons of baseball, Toronto’s Trey Yesavage played, throwing only 14 major league innings. Instead, New York starter Max Fried, a three-time All-Star game, finished the season with a 2.86 ERA. Although Yesavage has a bright future – he is currently the highest prospect for Blue Jays, his mound opponent appears to be the bet to perform better under the pressure-filled lights of the playoffs.
That didn’t happen. Yesavage, who started with Low-A and did not debut in his Major League Baseball until September 15, not only kept the Yankees away from the scoreboard, but he did it in an amazing way. As for the deep-frying – his teammates followed him on the bumps – it was a veritable horror show. He swayed. When it all was said, Toronto bombed the Bronx bombers, 13-7 routing mobilization, which was not as close as the final score suggested. The victory gave the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead in the five best division series.
The Canadian team launched four home runs and led 12-0 before the Yankees recorded their first single – a sixth inning single after Yesavage left a huge clapper – wasn’t a footnote to Rogers Center’s Rogers Center. Springer entered the yard in the fifth inning, with the Yankees on the board as Cody Bellinger put the Yankees on the board, Braydon Fisher hit the Yankees at the top of sixth, and Varsho hit the long ball again in the second half. At 13-2, Toronto’s lead was simply comfortable.
Until not.
The Yankees were reluctant to walk quietly, on the seventh loud contact. New York chewed three Blue Jays rescuers, plated five times, which made John Schneider’s club uncomfortable at least temporarily. At 13-7, the Yankees fell, but not necessarily out.
But, shortly after that, they have been completed. Louis Varland dropped the scoreless, while Seranthony Domínguez beat the zero in ninth place. Toronto’s overall bullpen effort wasn’t pretty — allowed 10 hits and 7 runs in 3 2/3 innings — but the mat provided by the offense would suffice. The Blue Jays thrived throughout the big game, which was a difficult time facing beginners with the Fried Caliber.
A fresh young guy with a power packed Yankees lineup completely shut down? He dominated history. Per Sportsnet Canada, Yesavage became the first pitcher in Major League Baseball history, struck out 11 times while missing the first five innings of the playoffs. His efforts have brought the Yankees into this series, winning 13 of 13 of the last 15 games, which is the edge of elimination.
After Monday’s travel day, the third game of the ALDS in the Bronx will be held Tuesday night, with the Yankees looking to repeat what they did in 2017, the last time they were trailing 2-0 in the five best series. That year, they lost their first two games against Cleveland, who like these Blue Jays won the most games in the American League. New York won two games, even the series, and gained momentum before winning the decisive Game 5.
