Islanders extend winning streak to four games with overtime win over Mammoths – The Hockey Writers – New York Islanders

On Friday night, the Utah Mammoths met the New York Islanders for the first time, another team they share a lottery pick with, as they selected high-profile prospect Matthew Schaeffer with the No. 1 pick.
The Mammoths ended a three-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabers. As for the Islanders, they enter the game on a three-game winning streak, winning their last two games in overtime.
game review
The Islanders broke the deadlock just over seven minutes into the game with Emil Heineman’s eighth goal of the season and his first for the Islanders for the second straight game.
That lead didn’t last long, however, as JJ Peterka opened the scoring for the Mammoths in his sixth game of the season and his second in as many games off a nifty backdoor pass from Lawson Crouse.
Then, five more minutes later, Dylan Guenther gave the Mammoths the lead, scoring his seventh goal of the season with a one-timer on a power play from the left circle. Fans of Mammootty are very used to seeing things like this. This was the last goal of the opening period, and one goal later, the Mammoths returned to the locker room with a one-goal lead.
After the big score opened up in the first quarter, both teams strengthened their defense, resulting in a goalless draw in the midfield.
The Islanders finally got their second goal of the game with just over six minutes left in regulation, a goal that was initially disallowed by the referee for Jonathan Drew putting the puck in the net. The referee thought he was right to kick the puck. However, upon review, it was discovered that the puck never crossed the goal line, was blocked by a Mammoth defender, and then redirected away from Vimelka and into the net.
The goal sent the game into overtime, where Shafer and Barzal had a great double play, passing the ball back and forth several times before scoring the winning goal.
After the loss, the Mammoths rest the remainder of the weekend before heading to California for a brief two-game road trip, taking on the Anaheim Ducks and San Jose Sharks on Monday and Tuesday. The Islanders return to action on Sunday looking to win their fifth straight game and sixth straight on the road against the Colorado Avalanche.
