Bobby Orr had many unforgettable days during his storied career, but November 15, 1973 is almost as memorable as the most memorable. On November 15, 1986, Ron Francis wore 358 as the Hartford Whalers defeated the Edmonton Oilers.th A game played for the team. He surpassed Bryan Stoughton to become the most capped player in franchise history. He ended up playing 1,186 games, which remains a Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes record.
Ten years later, on November 15, 1996, Damian Rhodes won Game 15 of the Ottawa Senators’ 4-3 victory over the Blackhawks to become the Ottawa Senators’ victory leader. He broke Don Beaupre’s record of 14 points. His 65 wins remain the fifth-most in franchise history.

Two Hockey Hall of Famers achieved something significant as the Dallas Stars defeated the Colorado Avalanche 4-2. Mike Modano dished out an assist and became the fifth American-born player in league history to reach 1,000 career points. Patrick Roy has surpassed Terry Sawchuk to become the player with the most playing time for a goaltender in NHL history.

In Tampa Bay, Dave Andreychuk became the first player in NHL history to score 250 power-play goals. His landmark score helped the Chargers defeat the visiting San Jose Sharks 4-2. He retired with 274 power-play goals, which remains a league record.
Finally, Mike Comrie scored a goal and two assists in the Oilers’ 5-0 victory over the Blues, becoming the 51st player in franchise history to score 100 points. Tommy Salo recorded his 31st career shutout in this game.
A grand date in New York
All three NHL teams in New York State had unforgettable moments on this day.
Beginning on November 15, 1954, the Rangers acquired Andy Bathgate and Vic Howe from the Cleveland Barons of the American Hockey League in exchange for Glenn Somemore and Eric Pogue. Bathgate played 719 games for Rangers, scoring 272 goals and 729 points. He won the Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player in 1958-59 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1978.
On November 15, 1972, Steve Vickers became the first rookie in the modern era to score hat tricks in back-to-back games, leading the Rangers to a 7-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.
On November 15, 1983, Mike Bossy scored his 27th career hat trick and provided two assists, leading the New York Islanders to a 6-4 victory over the Whalers. He retired with 39 hat tricks, third in league history behind Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux.
Gilbert Perreault scored his final NHL point on November 15, 1986, assisting the Buffalo Sabres in a 4-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. Nine days later, he retired with 512 goals, 814 assists and 1,326 points, all of which remain franchise records.

A year later, Doug Smith scored his 100th career goal in the team’s 5-4 victory over the Maple Leafs, which was also the 5,000th goal in Sabres’ history.
On this day in 1994, veteran Sabers broadcaster Ted Darling was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. He joins former New York USA defenders Lionel Conacher, Harry Watson and Brian O’Neill in the induction class.
On November 15, 2015, the Rangers defeated the Maple Leafs 4-3 to win consecutive games. Mats Zuccarello scored the game-winning goal and added two assists to give the Blueshirts their longest winning streak since the 1972-73 season.
Finally, on November 15, 2018, the Islanders defeated the Rangers 7-5, earning their eighth consecutive victory over their inner-city rival. Anthony Beauvillier became the attacking hero, scoring his first and only career hat-trick to date.
Memories of the Three Flying Legends
On November 15, 1980, Bill Barber became the first Flyers player to score 300 goals. He also had an assist in the Flyers’ 5-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings. Since then, six more Flyers have scored 300 goals, but Barber remains the franchise’s all-time leader with 420 goals.
On November 15, 1984, the team retired Bobby Clarke’s No. 16 jersey before a 6-1 victory over the Whalers. Clark retired at the end of last season as the franchise’s all-time leader with 1,114 games, 852 assists and 1,210 points. In 1974 and 1975, he won two consecutive Stanley Cup championships as captain.

Rookie Eric Lindros lit up the lights three times on November 15, 1992, while also scoring his first career hat trick. Mark Recchi had a goal and four assists as the Flyers defeated the Senators 7-2.
Odds and outcomes
On November 15, 1927, Jack Adams made his NHL coaching debut, leading the Detroit Cougars (later the Red Wings) to a 6-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. He served as head coach in Detroit for 20 seasons and as general manager for 36 seasons. He is the only man to win a Stanley Cup as a player, head coach and general manager. Since the 1973-74 season, the Jack Adams Award has been awarded to the league’s best coach.
On November 15, 1928, the Bruins defeated the Pirates 1-0, and Thompson became the third goaltender in NHL history to score a buzzer-beating goal in his first game. Dieter Klapper scored the only goal of the game.
Ten years later, on November 15, 1938, the Bruins extended their overtime unbeaten streak to 37 games (10-0-27) with a 1-1 tie with the Maple Leafs. The 37-game streak began in December 1934 and remains the longest in NHL history.
On November 15, 1979, the Kings tied with the Penguins 3-3 at the Forum. The famous “Triple Crown” line of Marcel Dionne, Charlie Simmer and Dave Taylor scored a combined five points on the night. This brings the trio’s scoring streak to an astonishing 56 games.
That night, Doug Hicks scored the first NHL short-handed goal in Oilers history in the Oilers’ 5-3 loss to the Flyers.
On November 15, 1986, Rick Middleton scored his 900th career point with a third-quarter assist to help the Bruins draw 5-5 against the New Jersey Devils. He became the 27th player in NHL history to join the 900-point club.

On November 15, 2000, Greg Adams celebrated his 1,000th career NHL game, scoring the first goal of the night for the Florida Panthers in a 4-1 victory over the visiting Hurricanes. This is his 345th career goal.
That same day, the Bruins traded Anson Carter and first- and second-round draft picks to the Oilers for Bill Guerin. He played 142 games with Boston, scoring 69 goals and 129 points. Carter played 211 games for the Oilers, scoring 69 goals and 157 points. They used those two picks to select Ales Hemsky and Doug Lynch.
On November 15, 2005, the Columbus Blue Jackets acquired future Hall of Famer Sergei Fedorov from the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in exchange for Tyler Wright and Francois Beauchemin. He scored 39 goals and 113 points in 185 games with the Blue Jackets before being traded to the Washington Capitals in 1998.
On November 15, 2021, Jean Gabriel-Pageau played his 500th NHL game. Unfortunately, his Islanders team ended up losing 4-1 to the Lightning.
On this day in 2021, the Hockey Hall of Fame (HHOF) welcomed six new members. Doug Wilson, Kim St. Pierre, Kevin Lowe, Jarome Iginla, Marian Hossa and Ken Holland are immortalized on the walls of Toronto’s HHOF.
On the same day in 2022, six more members were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Daniel Alfredsson, Herb Carnegie, Roberto Luongo, Riikka Sallinen and Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin all received Hall of Fame jackets in Toronto.
On November 15, 2022, the number 400 stood out; John Tavares scored his 400th goal and Jack Eichel added his 400th assist. Tavares thus became the 107th player in NHL history to win this honor.
On November 15, 2023, Filip Hronek scored his first goal of the season and extended his scoring streak to 11 games, tying the longest scoring streak by a Canucks defenseman.
That night, Evander Kane scored a hat trick in the Oilers’ 4-3 win over the Kraken, scoring his third goal in overtime. He became the second player in franchise history to do so during the regular season and the eighth player in NHL history (regular season or playoffs).
On November 15, 2024, Alex Ovechkin joined Gordie Howe as the second player age 39 or older to score 20 points in the first 16 games of the season.
That same night, Flames rookie Dustin Wolf recorded his first career shutout, becoming the third California-born goaltender in NHL history to record a shutout, joining Thatcher Demko and John Blue.
Finally, in Anaheim, Red Wings rookie Marco Kasper (20 years and 221 days) scored his first NHL goal and became the third youngest Austrian-born player to score his first career goal, following Andre Burakovsky (19 years and 242 days) on October 9, 2014, and Marco Danault (19 years and 315 days) on October 11, 2014.
