This “game-improving” fairway wood has won multiple PGA Tour championships

The Titleist “1” metal wood deck has always been designed specifically for high handicap and slow swingers to help them get the ball in the air.

But after this past week, Titleist GT1 fairway woods have won multiple PGA Tour titles in just a few months and are seeing a huge uptick in usage.

Michael Brennan just became the latest PGA Tour winner with his 3-wood GT1 3Tour variant. The 23-year-old pro had only qualified on the PGA Americas Tour before this week, but he performed well off the tee at the Bank of Utah Championship, collecting more than 7.5 strikes, the most of any player all season.

Brennan added the GT1 3Tour to the bag after working with Titleist Tour representative Nick Geyer to replace his previous GT3 fairway in Utah last week. Gayle said Brennan liked the shallow clubface of the GT1 compared to the GT3, and it was easier for him to get the ball off the turf and into the air without losing any off-the-drive performance.

That was evident in the final round, when Brennan hit a 3-wood onto the green on the 312-yard 14th hole for his final birdie of the week.

The GT1 fairway wood, like all other Titleist “1” products (i.e. TSi1, TSr1), is designed to be an ultra-light product with an extra-deep center of gravity to help players get the ball into the air. But by adding front and rear adjustable weights and throwing the heavyweights forward in standard weight specifications, you can create a high-trajectory, low-spin fairway wood that even better golfers will be attracted to.

“During GT1 fairway testing, we found that some tour players really liked the club’s shape and face height, but we knew that many of them needed less loft and a lower center of gravity for greater flight,” said JJ Van Wezenbeeck, senior director of club promotions at Titleist.

The GT1 3Tour used by Brennan takes this design and gives it a slightly stronger loft and lower center of gravity to help faster players produce a flatter trajectory but still take advantage of the wide, shallow profile.

Van Wezenbeeck told GOLF at the Travelers Championship that the GT1 Tour’s usage rate is almost equal to that of the GT3 and second only to the GT2 in the Titleist fairway wood lineup. Kurt Kitayama won the 3M Open earlier this year with a GT1 3-wood and 7-wood in his bag.
