Former Duke star, Thunder player Kyle Singler charged with assault

Former Duke and Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kyle Singler was charged with misdemeanor assault in Oklahoma on Tuesday after his girlfriend told authorities he grabbed her head and pushed her to the ground.

Kyle Singler arrested in Whitefield after making 911 call

Singler, 37, was arrested Thursday in the eastern Oklahoma town of Whitefield after someone called 911 saying Singler was chasing a woman outside a local home.

Jail records show Singler was booked into the Haskell County Jail and later released on $6,000 bail. He was charged Tuesday in Haskell County with one misdemeanor count of assault and battery in the presence of a child.

Singler’s girlfriend told the deputy that Singler grabbed her head and pushed her to the ground, according to the arrest affidavit.

Deputy Mitch Dobbs reported that he could observe the outline of fingers on the woman’s face and marks on her arms, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.

The woman told Dobbs that Singler was the father of her young child and that the child was present when the incident occurred, the affidavit states.

Dobbs reported that Singler did not cooperate with authorities or make a statement to them and that he appeared to be under the influence of narcotics.

Singler’s cryptic Instagram post draws widespread attention

Singler’s arrest comes nearly a year after he made a shocking Instagram post saying he feared for his life. The video sparked an outpouring of concern and support from former teammates and others.

“I was abused, mistreated, neglected, made a spiritual role model,” Singler said. “I fear for my life every day. People in the community make me look like I’m going to be a problem and make things difficult for others, when I’m just trying to help.

“I felt like I had a certain vision of myself, my strength, and my purpose that wasn’t valued or treated appropriately.”

Singler was a member of Duke’s 2010 national championship team and was named the NCAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

Although Singler was selected by the Detroit Pistons with the 33rd overall pick in the 2011 draft, the 6-foot-8 wing began his career overseas before entering the NBA.

Singler played nearly three full seasons with the Pistons, and the Oregon native was named to the All-Rookie Second Team in 2013. He spent parts of his final four seasons with the Thunder.

In 356 career NBA regular season games (172 starts), Singler averaged 21.9 minutes per game, 6.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, shooting 41.8% from the field, 36.2% from three-point range, and 78.6% from the free throw line.
