Cooley’s talent propels Flames to 3-2 shootout win over Stars – Hockey Writer – Calgary Flames

The Dallas Stars (13-5-4) rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the third period but couldn’t get the job done as the Calgary Flames (7-13-3) won 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday night.

Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz scored for the Stars in regulation, with Robertson scoring in the shootout. Casey DeSmith made 31 saves.

Matt Coronato and Joel Farabee scored in regulation for the Flames. Morgan Frost and Nazeem Kadri scored in the shootout. Devin Cooley made 28 saves.

It took just over 31 minutes to break a deadlock on Saturday, with both netkeepers performing well all night. Coronato finally scored his eighth goal of the season on a power play at 11:41. Kadri passed the ball to Coronato below the goal line, and Coronato shoveled the ball past DeSmith before entering the penalty area to give the Flames a 1-0 lead.

Near the end of the second period, Mikko Rantanen was given a two-minute penalty for a slash, but was given a five-minute penalty for hitting Coronato and was found guilty of a game misconduct. It was Rantanen’s second ejection in the past three games.

Farabee extended Calgary’s lead with a power-play goal with 1:50 left in the second period, but Rasmus Andersson’s spot-up shot was blocked.

At 6 minutes and 44 seconds, Robertson’s hot momentum continued. He beat Cooley with a quick shot and scored his 13th goal of the season and his sixth consecutive game.

Hintz tied the game at 16:53 with a wrist shot from the right circle, his fifth of the season.

The Flames killed off a 5-on-3 power play in the final minutes and sealed the victory in a shootout.

The Flames outshot the Stars 33-30 and went 2-for-6 on the power play. The Stars took advantage of their personnel advantage and went 0 for 4 from the field.

The Flames will face the Canucks in Vancouver on Sunday night, while the Stars continue on the road against the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday.
