The Devil’s Gambling on Sigge Holmgren is worth mentioning – Hockey Writer – New Jersey Devils

Even when Swedish offensive guard Sigge Holmgren heard the name of the New Jersey Devils in the sixth round of the 2025 NHL draft. “I didn’t see that coming,” Homgren told Hockey writer. “But I feel so excited and proud, super happy.”

Almost all major media have no rankings at all. Google searches after the draft pick resulted in almost zero information about him, his origins or play style. So, what makes the Devil feel like they need to catch him on #178 before the remaining 46 draft picks?

Holmgren A *very* hidden gem?

According to Sweden’s Hockeysverige, he was dislocated and had surgery before the Hlinka Gretzky Cup held last summer. Within seconds, Homgren will prove himself to be a legitimate NHL prospect and that will be a dream opportunity. He missed the entire 2024-25 season.

His last time playing hockey was in 2023-24, and he is developing with the Brynäs if one of the major hockey clubs in Sweden. From the age of 14, he spent time rising up in their ranks, climbing from the U16 to the U18 and then to the U20 race.

In that 2023-24 season, he scored 16 points in 18 matches in the Swedish U18 League, leading all 2025 eligible defensive players, including six goals with the league-leading ones. But anyway, injury is too harmful to his draft stocks. Not only did he miss the entire season, he also missed the Hlinka Gretzky Cup and the U18 World, two of the most popular events for players in this age group.

When searching for his name on YouTube, it started with a channel in which three subscribers released clips of the video game “Fortnite” during Covid Pandemic. It is not clear whether the channel belongs to the Devil’s prospect, and it was supposed to be 14 years old at the time of the video. But you get it: Homegren is not a lot of reconnaissance radar.

On Tiktok, BrynäsIF IF has a great video on the 2022 U16 team showing Holmgren using his wrist-decent shots to get them 2-1. This seems to be the level of content that can be found on the World Wide Web.

But, in what is considered to be such a weak draft, the first round may never be the NHL, which is a sure worthy gamble. He scored more points than his other seven league companions in his final healthy season, who ended up picking in front of him, including a second-round pick at Theodor Hallquisth (Wild, Minnesota) and Liam Pettersson (Bruins Boston).

Signs of hope

From the ophthalmic tests in the development camp, he didn’t look at any place even after a long absence. He showed off some short offensive ability and above average shots and ended it all with an eighth round of gunfight in the scrimmage, expanding the gunfight and helping his team eventually win.

If the Devils hit this draft pick, it would not be the first time they have done so in a player with a similar development path. Jesper Bratt was also selected in the sixth round, when he was also a point before playing in Sweden’s U18 league and exploded a few years later.

Homgren told thw. “I like rushing, but when we have to turn off the game and stuff, I also want to play in the D-Zone for a few minutes, but my (main) strength is offensive.”

If he stays in Brynäs in 2025-26, he will be in the same program with Devils’ 2025 fourth-round draft pick and close friend Gustavhillström. “We are very good friends,” Homgren said. “He’s an amazing person, so it’s nice to bring him here.”

Hillström responded to the same view, telling thw“Sig is a very good guy. He is actually the guy I hang out in Sweden.”

Homgren confirmed to Hockeysverige that his shoulders are feeling much better now. After more than 15 months without participating in organized hockey, it is certainly not easy to get back to the path to relevance. But if you are a fan of the Devil, remember this name and don’t be surprised if he will explode in the future.
