That’s why it’s not always the best idea to seek a lower spin

It feels like everyone in casual games is always looking for a lower spin.

But that’s not always the best idea.

In this week’s golf’s full-featured podcast, co-hosts Johnny Wunders and Jake Morrow address fashion goals in recent years and why it shouldn’t be all and ultimately the most golfers.

“Your goal in life is not to hit the lowest spin you can find. I don’t know when it will be something,” Morrow said. “It’s been ten years, maybe more, but I hope we can find a way out of that.”

Morrow Reference Ping’s best startup conditions chart you can find in the Fitted Bay or its Proof of Ground blog. This chart illustrates the optimal launch conditions that players should be based on their attack angle and ball speed.

On the chart, the absolute fastest man can 375 yards in the air at 200 mph. But this involves an attack angle of 10 degrees upwards, a launch angle of 17 degrees and a rotation speed of 1750 rpm.

“People don’t understand the 17-degree altitude of the launch,” Morrow explained. “This won’t work for you.”

About 10 years ago, there seemed to be a power to perform a driver setup that brought a spin rate for players below 2000 rpms, and Wunder even admitted he was trapped.

“It’s inward to get into the forums and talking about how far they hit on golf,” he said. “And I just played this absolute tomahawk. It’s probably farther than anything I’ve carried in my life.

But unless a player like Wunder (at batting speed in the mid-160s) fires the ball at 17 degrees or higher, he doesn’t optimize ball flights for the number of spins below 2000, and he’s sacrificing control.

As the ball is slower, it becomes more extreme. If their ball spins below 2000, players at the 140s ball speed need to send the ball in 20 degrees. In fact, the player tried to get the start angle in the 10-12 range, while in the rotation range of 2500 north, this not only optimizes their distance, but also gives them more control.
