Stuttgart Open: Jelena Ostapenko beats IGA Swiatek for sixth time

Jelena Ostapenko continued his dominance over Iga Swiatek with a three-set victory to reach the Stuttgart Open semifinal.

Latvia's Ostapenko beat the world second place 6-3 3-6 6-2, unbeaten against the ball to six games.

Ostapenko was the first player to beat Swiatek five times on each surface – on the grass, four times on the hard court, and now one at a time on the clay.

“She is a great clay player, but I won the French [Open] Again, I can say the same thing to myself,” the 27-year-old said.

“I have a lot of respect for her and her team, but every time I step on the court with her it’s a fight and I’m ready.”

Ostapenko will face the semifinals against Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova, who beat third seed Jessica Pegula 6-0 6-4.

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who entered the quarterfinals after an injury to rival Anastasia Potapova, faced Elise Mertens late Saturday before Coco Gauff played Jasmine Paolini.
