Stars acquire Sam Tumala from Flyers, adding speed to AHL lineup – Hockey Writer – Dallas Stars

The Dallas Stars acquired Samu Tumala from the Philadelphia Flyers on October 30 and immediately assigned him to the Texas Stars. The 22-year-old has 75 points in 120 American Hockey League (AHL) games and is known for his speed and offensive mentality. The move costs Stars defensive prospect Christian Kyroux and signals Texas’ effort to inject speed and finish in the middle six and second.

why he is suitable

Tumala’s game began with skating at the NHL level. He adds speed with crossover passes, stays low to slide contact, and cuts inside to net or recover loose pucks. The same speed shows up defensively, where he can step into entries, approach from behind, and disrupt exits. He’ll make the most of his tools by moving the puck earlier and tightening up his off-ice routes so late trajectories don’t turn into weird rushes. In Texas, pairing him with distributors and providing clean exit support should allow separation of the first three buys rather than forcing a solo rush.

Finland Track Record

Toumala grew up in Oulu, developed under Karl Pat’s system, and earned a Media All-Star nomination at the 2021 IIHF U18 World Championship after scoring 11 points in seven games. Philadelphia then selected him with the 46th overall pick in 2021. After a brief spell with Jukurit in the Liiga (Finland’s highest league), he was loaned to Imatran Ketterä in Mestis (Finland’s second highest league), where he scored 46 points in 29 games.

background snapshot

Tumaala was drafted in the second round by the Flyers in 2021, signed his entry-level contract in August of that year and has established himself in the AHL over the past two seasons following the aforementioned Finn’s suspension. A press release from the Stars confirmed that he would start the 2025-26 season with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms prior to the trade.

What he brings to Texas tactically

Charge threat and second power shooter. Tumala can win the defense with his speed and then cut inside to quickly release his wrist. He serves as a catch-and-shoot option on the wing on the power play and can also play downhill off the wall. He played for Lehigh Valley in the 2024-25 season, having played in the AHL All-Star Classic as a rookie with the Phantoms the previous year.

Pre-check the speed that leads to bad contact. Texas played quick in-and-out pressure. Tumala’s first three steps and inside shoulder positioning fit this scheme, creating loose puck space for the passing center.

Weak side timing. He got to space early and could hit the net with one click. When he stalls for time at the back post, defenders are stretched, opening up space for space.

Cedar Park usage and deployment

Judging from his past performance, a second or third-line right wing role would be suitable. Give him a hurried look, a clear retrieval role, and an early talking bumper so Toumala doesn’t have to rush to make everything. If Texas keeps the puck on his stick in his stride rather than letting him quarterback from half the wall, you maximize immediate returns.

Future fit with Dallas

Dallas now has the win with structure and goaltending, but the staff has been vocal about two differentials, five-on-five scoring and leading game management. The Stars have finished last in the league in scoring over the past 10 games while the strength of the team is winning, which makes adding rush creation and rushing offense even more important at five-on-five. They also lost ground in early October by taking unnecessary risks and losing wall battles when momentum flipped, so there’s real value in a new forward who can tilt the ice without feeding the counter.

If Toumala pays attention to detail, he can help in both areas. As he develops, his quickness and long stride make Dallas a plug-and-play middle-six scorer, and if the habits stick, he can become a reliable call-up guy, adding speed to the third line and pushing for primary opportunities at five-on-five. The organization’s own assessment shows that even in victory, they will need more power generation.

In the short term, the team should let him cook at Cedar Park with a clear rush pattern and second power play. In the medium term, his clearest path to the NHL is as a bottom-six right winger who can increase retrieval velocity, help stay on top with clean exits, and play a role in a second unit that’s already hot but in need of depth options through 82 games. The acquisition and immediate assignment at Texas gives Dallas a full season to shape itself before making a summer decision.
