St. Vincent won a stunning comeback Saturday night in the Live Classics (and early contenders of the Year), playing a highly anticipated showdown between two defending state champions in the North Bay.

The Broncos scored 20 points in the last seven minutes of the fourth quarter and intercepted the game with six seconds left.

How it happens

American Canyon (1-1) looks ready to beat the two-time defending champion Broncos as the Wolves lead 21-7 midway through the fourth quarter. St. Vincent (2-0), who dressed up 19 players for the match only because of a series of injuries in the season opener last week, was unable to complete strong momentum and had already flipped the ball in the U.S. Canyon area mistakes to start the season.

The script quickly flipped a series of playback tracks. First, Isaac Anderson scored a 62-yard touchdown with a 62-yard shot, the drama will give the Wolves three points with the remaining eight minutes. Instead, the Wolves had to tie, and the Mustangs took advantage of the beautiful drama to get Mason Caturegli wide, scoring a touchdown of 27 yards, leaving 5:30 for a 21-13 run.

The Broncos then rested the Wolves again on the subsequent property. The kick deflected a blocker and ended up at -5 yards, putting St. Vincent on the Wolves’ 31-yard line in less than three minutes. The Mustangs only need three games to find the finish area again, this time with a four-yard goalkeeper for quarterback Gabe Casanovas. However, Wolves made a defensive stance to stop the two-point attempt and maintain the lead 21-19.

But St. Vincent didn’t finish it. Jack Ellis resumed the perfect execution of the midfield with the remaining 2:30. Ellis stepped up the game again after seven games, fighting teeth and nails for an 18-yard touchdown with 43 seconds left for a 27-21 run.

Until the final property, the U.S. Canyon pushed to the Broncos’ 37-yard line before Brody Breen won the victory through a diving intercept on the tip, with only six seconds left, his second game.

The Broncos scored 130 points in the final three games in the game in the 290-yard offense. Casanovas scored six points for 45 yards in his first game and completed seven of his last nine attempts to make a comeback. He made 14 pass yards with 21 touchdowns and 14 pass yards with two touchdowns and rushed for 74 yards with 17 goals.

Ellis led the team to 64 yards and scored 64 yards with five points, while Caturegli had 58 yards on 13 offenses and 57 yards in 4 catches and 2 total touchdowns.

In the second half, Wolves ran 157 times in 215 yards. Star-run Andre Lopez led the team with 19 carry 96 rushing yards but didn’t find the finish line. The Wolves trailed 7-6 in the halftime, with Evan Paras contributing his own score on six points for 45 yards to open the game before scoring twice in the third quarter to get into fourth with a 21-7 lead.

Marcus Hughes finished with 22 yards in seven carrys, scoring a 14-7 hit with a 4-yard touchdown in the third inning, and Anderson scored 21-7 with 81 yards in nine carrys, scoring a 6-yard touchdown late in the frame.

Key bullet

Too many.

Anderson gave the Mustangs a life-threatening touchdown titled 62 yards in the fourth inning. Just like the recovery of deflected punts and side kicks.

But even with the break, Bolling had six seconds left for the draft pick, which eventually put the game to bed.

Quoteable

“We have a championship heart. We’ve been doing it here and we keep going. We never doubt ourselves. We felt very good about ourselves at the halftime; in the first two games we had two turnovers, we had the ball, our kids didn’t give up on each other. They were fighting all the time. They got the kids out, the pain, the pain, the effort, the effort and the proud people were all proud. They never gave up, the hat of this team was my hat. – St. Vincent head coach Trent Herzog

“Come in, there are 19 players, a wide range of receivers turning to the right tackle – I think we have more hearts than any other team and our coaches are ready every week. I just think a team isn’t going to beat us right now.” – Breen

“In our minds, we all know it’s the game we want. Everyone says we can’t beat big schools. We really think of it, like this is the game we’ve been waiting for for three years, it’s our big games, we do it. We show that we can compete with big guys.” – Ellis

“(This victory) shows the talent this team has, whether we have 50 players or not, or 19 players. We can play with anyone, and I think that should give us respect.” – Casanovas

Important points

As the Broncos players say, there is more evidence for this victory that St. Vincent should be classified as more than a good elementary school plan. They are a good program, period.

The rise of St. Vincent over the past few years has led many to hope to see the Mustang compete with the larger plans of the North Bay. This year, we can finally see it. American Canyon has 1,700 students, with a total of almost 10 times as many students in St. Vincent.

The Broncos did win three divisions in the state championship, three points higher than the 2024 Wolves, but the school size cannot be ignored, especially this week’s St. Vincent Shorthed.

Wolves should also be worth mentioning for pushing the Mustang to the edge. The Wolves seem ready to be a team once again that can not only compete for some of the titles, but may again win state titles.

This is not the last time St. Vincent faces a larger school this season. The Broncos will be on October 4 against traditional Rancho Cotate’s top-notch North Bay schedule.

What’s next

St. Vincent will play on Lowell-san Francisco (0-2) this weekend, while American Canyon hosts Benicia (0-2).
