Spurs’ Victor Vunbanyama out for several weeks with calf strain

San Antonio Spurs star center Victor Wembanyama will miss several weeks due to a strained left calf, sources close to the team told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Monday.

Wembanyama was listed as doubtful earlier Sunday due to tightness in his left calf, and the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft was ultimately ruled out before the Spurs’ win over the Sacramento Kings.

“Obviously, what we’ve seen around the league recently is that calf tightness is something that can’t be taken lightly,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said Sunday. “Don’t want to push it out there.”

According to ESPN’s Michael C. Wright, Wembanyama was seen wearing a small sleeve on his injured calf in the locker room after Sunday’s game, but the 21-year-old showed no signs of discomfort.

Bunyama played 38 minutes in Friday’s NBA Cup game against the Golden State Warriors, scoring a team-high 26 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and three blocks.

It was the third consecutive 25-point and 10-rebound game for Wembunyama, tying the longest scoring streak of his NBA career, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Wimbanyama leads Spurs to first 5-0 start

Earlier this season, Wimby led the Spurs to their first 5-0 start in franchise history and recorded their fifth consecutive double-double. He also scored a team-high 26 points, 18 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 blocks in a 107-101 home victory over the Miami Heat on October 30.

Since blocks became an official statistic in the 1973-74 season, he became the second player after Bob McAdoo (1975) to average at least 30 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks per game in the first five games of the season.

In 12 games this season (all starts), Wembanyama averaged 34.6 minutes per game, scoring a career-high 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists, shooting a career-high 50.2% from the field, and a career-high 85.7% from the free throw line.

Veteran free agent Luke Kornet took over the starting lineup for Wembanyama on Sunday and finished with 13 points on 5-for-5 shooting and three blocks.

The San Antonio Spurs added Kornet as a free agent to bolster the team’s frontcourt in the absence of Wembanyama. Kornet posted a plus-13 plus-minus in the win over the Kings.

Kelly Olynyk and Bismack Biyombo could also see more playing time in Wembanyama’s absence.
