Carlos Alcaraz splits from coach Juan Carlos Ferrero after long-term partnership

Many did not foresee the end of the partnership – and certainly not the timing.
The news comes shortly after Alcaraz celebrated his year-end men’s No. 1 ranking at the ATP Finals with Ferrero and his team.
Alcaraz gave no hint of a possible split after losing to arch-rival Yannick Sinner in the late-season Turin final, saying he was looking forward to analyzing his strengths and weaknesses in the off-season ahead of 2026.
However, a documentary released last year did show some signs of tension in their relationship.
At some points during the series, Ferrero seemed frustrated with his protégé’s application and questioned his decision to head to Ibiza after winning the French Open in 2024 – against the advice of Ferrero and his agent Molina.
But after Alcaraz won this year’s U.S. Open with the best performance of his career, Ferrero praised the player’s growing maturity.
Alcaraz is known to have his mind wander during games, so it’s striking how his focused performance in New York helped him find another level.
Ferrero’s constant presence – providing subtle guidance during the game and always demanding strict discipline – was key.
But Alcaraz appears to have decided he needs another direction, despite having the best season of his career.
The timing is odd, as sources say Ferrero wants to stay on the job and is not leaving for personal reasons.
How Alcaraz fares without his longtime mentor will be one of the most intriguing storylines of 2026.
