Carlos Alcaraz exits Madrid with groin injury

Carlos Alcaraz exited the Madrid Open due to injury – but hopes for his French Open Championship defense.

Spain World III said he suffered a hamstring and groin in the second set of the Barcelona Open final on Sunday.

“In a week or two, I will return to the training, but I will do it step by step,” Alkaraz said.

“I couldn’t practice all week. I needed to listen to my body and make the right decisions.

“I don't want to go too far, but I hope I can prepare for the French Open.”

Alcaraz has won the Madrid championship twice and won the Monte Carlo Masters in April.

In Barcelona's final against Holger Rune, he left the court for treatment and was able to resume the game, and Dane continued to win 6-2 with a 7-6 (8-6).

Alcaraz said he intends to travel to Rome, which will begin on May 6 before the French Open begins on May 25.
