Sandy Alomar Sr. dies

former all star infielder Sandy Alomar Sr. He has died, according to an announcement from the Puerto Rico Professional Baseball League. He is 81 years old and will be 82 next weekend.

father of major league players Roberto Alomar and Sandy Alomar Jr.Sandy Sr. enjoyed his 15-year career. He played for the Angels, Yankees, White Sox, Expos, Rangers and Mets from 1964-78. Alomar Sr. was named to the 1970 All-Star team as a member of the Angels, where he hit .251/.302/.293 that season and played in all 162 games while providing quality defense and 35 stolen bases.

All told, Alomar hit .245/.290/.288 in 5,160 major league games during his 15 years as a major leaguer. He primarily played second base, but also played over 1,200 innings at shortstop and made a few appearances at hot corner. Alomar is known for his glove and speed, not his bat. He hit only 13 home runs, 126 doubles and 19 triples in his career, but had 227 stolen bases in his career. He is one of 300 players to steal at least 225 bags in his career.

In addition to his playing career, Alomar spent 16 seasons as a major league coach with the Padres (third base coach), Cubs (first base coach), Rockies (third base coach) and Mets (bench coach, first base coach). He also played in the minor leagues with the Cubs and Mets, and coached and managed teams at home in the Puerto Rico Winter League for several seasons.
