In the first quarter, the Avalanche opened the scoring at 13 minutes and 29 seconds. Kyle Makar cut in from the right and fired a shot that hit the post and past goalkeeper Stuart Skinner for his fifth goal of the season. Then, just over a minute later, Makar made a similar play, beating the defender under the arm. Colorado thought they had one more assist from Gabriel Landeskog, but the Oilers challenged the offsides and succeeded, keeping the score at 2-0. That was the score going into halftime, with the Avalanche holding a 9-6 shot advantage.

With just 2 minutes and 38 seconds left in the game, Colorado extended its lead to 3-0. Sam Malinsky’s pass was not cleared by Skinner, and Gavin Brinkley grabbed the juicy rebound for his second goal of the season. Colorado’s dominance continued when Brent Burns’ slap pass was redirected past the netminder by Jack Drury in the high post at 4:45 of the period. Skinner was eventually replaced by the Oilers’ Calvin Pickard.

The Oilers’ embarrassment continued at home as Parker Kelly made it 5-0. Colorado won another puck battle when Kelly stood alone in front of the net and slid the puck past Pickard.

Edmonton finally came out strong at 11:30 into the quarter. Connor McDavid walked in and elected to shortside for his fifth time of the season.

Kelly scored another shorthanded goal. Kelly forced a turnover and broke through, beating Pickard with a backhand fake shot for a beautiful goal. The Avalanche took a huge 6-1 lead into the second intermission, with a 12-10 shot advantage during the period and a total score of 21-16.

At the start of the final frame, Nathan MacKinnon connected with Martin Necas on a bizarre run and he added his 11th shot of the season just 24 seconds into the game. MacKinnon scored another goal to make the score 8-1. He stepped out of the penalty area, quickly entered the offensive zone, and shot over Pickard’s glove on the sprint for his fourth point of the game. Drury then made it 9-1 in the second game on a great pass from Ross Colton. Colorado outscored Edmonton 14-8 in the third quarter and beat Edmonton 34-24 overall.

The Avalanche will end their back-to-back road trip against the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday (Nov. 9). Meanwhile, the Oilers will wrap up a mini-two-game homestand against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday (Nov. 10). The two teams will meet again on March 10 in Colorado.
