ITIA offers financial help to tennis players involved in doping investigation

The Professional Tennis Players Association, which was co-founded by Djokovic to empower athletes, launched a program in January offering free support from two prominent law firms.

The legal hours provided are limited and the services ITIA is able to provide will also be limited.

Sports Solutions, an independent dispute resolution firm, has provided pro bono legal support to players who have tested positive.

The service is now open to players from the moment they test positive, rather than when they are charged, but long-term support depends on finding lawyers willing to work for free.

Those wishing to prepare their cases using a WADA-approved laboratory will receive assistance worth up to $5,000 (£3,730).

Individuals can also sign up for six sessions with Sporting Chance, a mental health organization set up to support professional athletes.

ITIA chief executive Karen Moorhouse said: “Anyone who finds themselves involved in an anti-doping or anti-corruption investigation should be given the opportunity to defend or explain themselves and we recognize the financial and emotional costs this process can have.”

“No player picks up a tennis racquet as a child with any motivation other than playing.

“People get into these situations for a lot of reasons, so no matter what those reasons are and no matter how the case turns out, they deserve someone to talk to.”

The trial will be reviewed by the end of 2026.
