Utah Mammoths look to follow in Montreal Canadiens’ footsteps with top-tier expansion
Jeff Marek’s Worksheet: David Pagnotta talks with Jeff Marek about how the Utah Mammoths will follow the Montreal Canadiens’ salary structure when it comes to re-signing Logan Cooley and other core players.

Pagnotta: “You know, Utah has looked at what the Montreal Canadiens are doing and, frankly, I think there’s a few teams that are looking at what the Canadiens are doing with some of their top players. Not necessarily from a restriction standpoint, but everybody’s going to take it a little less because we’re going to do this together and we’re going to keep this team together for a long time.
As you know, it started with Nick Suzuki, but obviously, there’s other talent and if it goes beyond that number, so be it. Noah Dodson is a prime example, he made much more at $9.5 (million), but he also took less money. Lane Hutson cut his income to hang on.
You’re saving £150, £250 a year on AAV in the long term, but you have 10 people doing that and that’s a pretty big cap space to use going forward.
NHL Rumors: Logan Cooley in no rush to re-sign
I think Utah State is looking to emulate that to some degree with its own format and have some guys that are going to be top players. If a guy like Logan Cooley sets the standard and they expect him to be their primary weapon, and certainly he and his camp believe in him, then he’s going to be one of their top players for years in a row. How does this look in numbers? At the same time, do we have to make that commitment now, rather than four or five years from now? “
