Rory McIlroy revealed the New Year’s resolution. Did he give it?

North Berwick, Scotland – We were all a little closer 12 months ago when Rory McIlroy, a man of millions of people, admitted to reporters that he had not taken a leave. . . OK, for a long time.
“Like a proper vacation?” he asked. Yes – no golf clubs, no time in the simulator. The feet are upwards and the arms are stinging.
“I don’t even remember,” he concluded. “It’s been a while.”
This comes from a man who says he loves traveling and exploring different food and cultures. Early in his career, he moved to Dubai, then to Florida, and now he moved outside London again. But for one reason his travels simultaneously was through a lot of travels of golf, marriage, parenting and life, and escaped during the holidays.
It also comes from a golfer who has just been broken by Pinehurst Bryson DeChambeau. McIlroy has been three weeks since the tour and is talking about how he likes to disconnect. He talked about the need to celebrate his victory more. The holiday sounds good, but you can tell him when to admit that he doesn’t remember his recent holiday, which is not friendly to him, so he put forward some soft goals to stay away from the game in the winter and spring.
Rory McIlroy explains Scotland’s open advantages
Before the 2025 Genesis Scottish Open begins, 2023 champion Rory McIlroy discusses the strength of the Genesis Scottish Open, which is a game, and then there is a reason to fit the PGA Tour and DP World Tour players.
But if we know nothing about McIlroy, that’s these two things: (1) at least half of his calendar year is half of the event playing on two different tours around the world, and (2) he’s not afraid to change his mind. So it’s always fun to see how he’ll describe the last 12 months of his life and if he feels like he’s living up to the outspoken self-promotion. The answer came at a public Scottish press conference on Wednesday.
He joked: “I missed the Troon cut and went straight to Portugal, so that was my first vacation.”
“But yes, I think one of my New Year’s resolutions over the past 12 months is to have more fun and I do try to do that.”
The pursuit of more fun may sound frivolous, or even indefinitely vague, but McIlroy holds the receipt. In January, it flew to a seemingly random and rather cold Bundesliga game with a bunch of partners in Germany, Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen. McIlroy wore local black and yellow gear that night and blended into the noisy crowd, attracted only to a few viewers.
On the way home, the lads stopped in Istanbul before heading to Dubai. A month later, McIlroy made several wins at the Yellowstone Club in Montana, where he promised a ski trip during a “proper vacation” conversation 12 months ago. His daughter Poppy is learning to ski. After winning the Masters, he sat next to football legend Wayne Rooney in the Europa League final at Manchester United in Bilbao, Spain.
It may be hard for outsiders to notice – especially when McIlroy largely avoids posting his whereabouts on social media – but these wins emphasize the subtle shift he intends to make forward. In pursuit, it seems to be checking the resolutions of the New Year.
“I think there’s a chance to do this kind of thing all year round,” McIlroy said. “I think now at the stage of my life I’m in, I’m actually trying to build my own schedule in those weeks rather than the other way around, trying to fit them here, or, can I take four days off?
“More, no, none of these will be prioritized – but they will become more and more important as they schedule the year, yes, and then suit those around golf games.”
How he continues to see the world, play the global timeline and find time with club time, which will never be exhibited this fall, as McIlroy landed in India in October, attending the first visit to Pudding Asian golf country for the Green Jacket. He will get off to the Australian Open in Royal Melbourne after the DP World Tour season in Dubai in November.
