Ron Washington

The Angels announced today that manager Ron Washington will take sick leave for the rest of the 2025 season. Ray Montgomery will continue to serve as interim manager. Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times is one of the messages. Infield coach Ryan Goins will take on Montgomery’s former backup coaching role.
It was reported a week ago that Washington would not be limited to a small amount of time to leave the canoe due to unspecified health problems. The issue is still not publicly specified, but is obviously serious, so Wash won’t resume its management responsibilities for the rest of the season.
Washington, 73, signed a two-year deal to manage Halos before the 2024 season. They finished 63-99 last year, but have performed much better so far this season. They are currently 40-40, with only one game in the playoff position. Shaikin reports that Washington has a 2026 club option in its contract.
Montgomery, 55, has been the Angels’ backup coach since 2022, keeping him the same for multiple management tenures. Joe Maddon was the captain in early 2022, but he was fired in June of that year. Phil Nevin replaced Maddon and took the position at the end of the 2023 season. After Nevin’s contract expired, Washington was hired for the 2024 campaign.
So far, his management experience is quite limited. Nevin was suspended for ten games after a fight with the Mariners in 2022, when Montgomery stepped in. He has been at the helm for the past week to replace Washington and now seems to be getting the job in the second half of the season as well.
Goins, 37, just retired after the 2023 season. A month later, he was joined by the infield coach in Washington. Now, as Angel instantly adjusts to cover up Washington’s absence, he will change his role.
