Rocky Mountains are expected to consider Thad Levine in front desk search

The Rockies officially parted ways with general manager Bill Schmidt this morning, finalizing the expected decision after one of the worst seasons in Major League Baseball history. ROX has announced that they will serve as the next head of baseball business outside the organization.

This alone could change the franchise hirings by two GMs in the past. Jeff Bridich and Schmidt were longtime members of the Colorado front desk before climbing to the top of the staff. The Rockies will move in different directions on the heels of the first three 100 seasons in franchise history. However, given that owner Dick Monfort is known for his loyalty, this is arguably an argument for isolation, if the next GM has some history with the organization, it is no surprise.

Schmidt’s strike immediately sparked speculation about former twin general manager Thad Levine, who worked at the Colorado front desk between 1999 and 2005. Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post listed him as five potential candidates for the position this morning. Although it’s a major speculative tie, Jon Morosi of the Major League Baseball Network also suggested that the Rockies consider Levine tonight.

Despite winning the GM championship in Minnesota, Levine, 53, has never led a baseball operations department. He has served for eight seasons with Chief Baseball Officer/President of Baseball Business Derek Falvey. He resigned at the start of the 2024-25 offseason. Prior to that, Levine spent more than a decade with Texas-based assistant General Motors (GM).

Levine’s name has appeared in numerous front-end searches over the years, including the 2021 Rockies before Schmidt was elected permanent general manager. He has not been in baseball in the past offseason, but Morossi reported that he was interested in the work of the Colorado General Manager.
