Rockies sign Xzavion Curry with minor league deal

Rockies have signed right-handed Xzavion Curry According to his transaction login on MLB.com, a minor league contract was signed. He has been pitching in the Mexican League since the Marlins released him earlier this year.

Curry, 27, started his career with the Guardians Organization and made his debut in Cleveland in 2022. Over the next three seasons, he played 50 club games (15 games), throwing 129 innings with 4.53 ERA and 5.19 Siera. He didn’t miss a lot of bats (strike rate of 15.2%) or prevent dangerous contact (29.4% ground ball rate, 44.7% impact rate), but he did enough strikes to traverse the innings and limits the damage to the extent of serviceability. Nevertheless, the guardian appointed him on the mission last August and Marlin filed a claim.

Righty didn’t last long in Miami, throwing 18 innings earlier this year last season. All in all, he has 4.38 ERA but 5.12 Siera in 150 MLB innings. Unfortunately for Curry, he also has a 7.19 ERA in the 76 1/3 of Triple-A’s innings over the past two years. He gave up 39 walks and 23 home runs while hitting only 58 times, resulting in a 7.56 FIP. So it’s not necessarily surprising that Marlins release him less than a year after the Marlins release him.

Curry has had even greater success in seven appearances in Tigres de Quintana Roo over the past few weeks, reaching a 3.44 ERA in 34 innings. Against the backdrop, the average era for the Mexican League this season is 5.82. When the sample was small, his intense appearance was enough to convince the Rockies to call him.
