Red Sox release Yasmani Grandal

Red Sox release catcher Yasmani Grandal Earlier this month, Baseball America’s Matt Eddy reported. Grandal left the organization back in June. There is no word yet on a possible retirement.

Grandal joined Boston on a minor league deal in April. He played 23 games in Triple-A, posting a solid 110 wRC+ with his typical plate discipline (15 strikeouts and 13 walks). Grandal last pitched for Worcester on June 1, going 1-for-2 with two walks. manager Chad Tracy told MassLive’s Katie Morrison-O’Day that he spoke to Grandal about his future the next day. “I knew he was going to pack up and leave…his response was “it’s time to be a dad”.

Grandal was placed on the restricted list on June 4. Tracy expressed his appreciation for the veteran’s performance on the team. “He is not isolating himself, he is in the midst of teaching young people everything,” Tracy said. “marvelous“.

The 37-year-old last appeared in the majors in 2024 with Pittsburgh. He played 72 games for the Pirates, slashing .228/.304/.400. He hit nine home runs in his only year with the club.

Grandal played for five different teams in 13 Major League Baseball (MLB) seasons. He was selected by Cincinnati in the first round of the 2010 draft. The Reds sent him to the Padres Matt Latos trading. He made his debut in 2012 in San Diego. Grandal was part of another major trade in 2014, heading to the Dodgers Matt Kemp trade. He became one of the most productive backers in the Los Angeles League, hitting 73 home runs in three seasons. Grandal joined the Brewers as a free agent in 2019 and hit a career-high 28 home runs. That season, he cashed in on a four-year, $73MM contract with the White Sox.
