Red Sox promote John Sotropoulos to assistant hitting coach

The Red Sox have named John Sotropoulos as assistant hitting coach, The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey reports. Sotropoulos has been the minor league hitting coordinator since 2023. Before joining Boston, Sotropoulos was a coach at Driveline Baseball.

McCaffrey added that Sotropoulos worked with minor league players on improving bat velocity and exit velocity during his time as hitting coordinator. The group includes top prospect Christian Campbell, Roman Anthonyand Marcelo Maier. The trio debuted in 2025 with mixed success.

Campbell led the team out of camp. He batted .301 through April, then fell off a cliff in May, batting .134. He continued to scrimmage into June and found himself back in the minors. Mayer got the call in late May. He showed plenty of power, albeit with strikeout issues. A wrist injury ended his season in July. Anthony is by far the most successful of the bunch. He joined the major league club a few weeks after Mayer. Anthony shakes off a slow June and has a wonderful July and August. From early July through the first week of September (when he injured his oblique), he had a .920 OPS and a 156 wRC+. That pressure would end his season.

Boston’s hitting coach is Pete Fatts. He joined the team as assistant hitting coach in 2020 and was promoted to head coach in 2022. Dillon Lawson also joins the team as assistant hitting coach. He serves as the Yankees’ hitting coach from 2022 to mid-2023.

Add Soteropulos to the growing list of employees making the jump from Driveline to the major league organization. Driveline founder Kyle Boddy has worked with multiple teams, including as a consultant to the Red Sox. Eric Jagers is the company’s former technical development manager and current Mets vice president of pitching. Sam Briend leads Seattle Driveline’s pitching development program and has served as the Yankees’ senior director of pitching since 2019.
