Rattlesnake Notes: Gurriel, Kelly, Gallen

D-Backs may have lost one of their regular customers last night. Outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. After contactless damage in the left center, he was dragged out of the field. He and Fire Alexander – Who made his first appearance in the midfield – Tracking the gap from the left center Rowdy Tellez. Alexander layout did a great dive, but Gurriel only pulled up and pivoted before a potential collision. Although these two avoided the impact, Gurriel descended after spinning and had to help the cart (video link).
Last night, the team had no initial diagnosis on Gurriel. After the game, manager Torey Lovullo told reporters that they arranged for today’s MRI and learned more after the facts (linked via Nick Piecoro in the Republic of Arizona). It is presumably he will update before tonight’s game against the Rangers – assuming a wave of imaging determines the diagnosis. We should learn more about Gurriel’s status soon, but there aren’t many instances that have to push players off the field and return to the roster for a short time.
Since D-BACKS 6.5 games start from the wildcard position, and in the 11 games in the department, they are likely to be cautious if there is a humble situation. Currently, Arizona’s playoff odds are down about 1%, and if Gurriel is lucky enough to avoid any significant losses, there is little feeling of rushing back and risking less than 100% of the game.
The 31-year-old Gurriel is probably the least productive season of his lengthy MLB tenure. He has entered his fourth career 20-bed season and has already had 19 big flies, but by measuring WRC+, Gurriel’s .248/.295/.418 Slash is 6% worse than the league average. If last night’s incident caused injuries to cut his season, it would be the first below average season in his career. Gurriel entered the season with a .279/.324/.461 hitter in 3009 Big League Plate appearances.
There are also contracts that need to be considered. Gurriel signed a three-year 42mm contract but has the right to opt out of the deal at the end of the season. Given a slightly below average stat, it seems unlikely that he will come out of the remaining year and 18mm (13mm salary in 2026), plus the 5mm acquisition of the 2027 $14mm club option).
However, Gurriel in the last three weeks hit the slash of .273/.315/.530. If he kept pounding like this for the last four weeks, he would have pulled the season-long batting line above average. Given his trail, this is reasonable, in which case he might be tempted to return to the market and see what free agents have to offer before they are 32 years old.
Speaking of D-backs and free agents, Arizona fans will be encouraged to hear the current Dormer D-Backs starter Merrill Lynch Kelly Expressing strong opening of re-signing during the offseason. Arizona trades Kelly to rangers in return to win three pitching prospects (Mitch Bratt,,,,, Kohl Drake,,,,, David Hagaman). With Rangers currently visiting D-Backs, Kelly told Jake Garcia that there are 12 news that he will definitely consider free agent returns (video link).
“I expressed my love for this place,” Kelly said. “I’ve talked to the front desk about living a d-fold to be a life. It’s really my plan. It’s real. It’s real. … So it’s never off the table. Not only for me, it’s very attractive not only to me, but to the family side. At the same time. At the same time, I’m not willing to be a good market, so it’s hard for me, but to be a business, but to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and to be a member, and
Arizona will need to play weapons in the upcoming season, so it makes sense for both sides to pay. Corbin Burnes Most or all will recover from Tommy John’s surgery next year. Zach Gallen It’s a free agent. left handed Black Walston (March) and Tommy Henry (June) also underwent surgery by Tommy John this year. prospect Yilber Diaz and Christian Mining Both struggle and/or injury. Next year’s rotation is currently expected to include Eduardo Rodriguez,,,,, Brandon Pfaadt and Ryne Nelsonthere is almost no other certainty.
Bringing Kelly back would obviously go a long way to stabilize the group and likely to be done without making a long-term commitment. He will turn 37 in October, so anything that’s over two years would be surprised. As shown in the contract tracker of MLBTR, Max Shezer (Three years, $130mm for 2021) and Rich Hill (Three years, 2016 48mm) is the only free agent starting pitcher in the past decade, reaching a deal of more than two years at age 37 or older.
As for Kelly’s long-term rotation partner, Gallen, it remains to be seen that the snakes will be serious in the reunion. However, Gallen is doing his best to flip the script in a disappointing season for free agents. Too little, too late to save the team’s season, but Gallen opened six innings with eight punches against the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 29 and lowered his time below 5.00. The average running average of 4.94 still won’t stand out, but Galen has been pitching well for two months.
Dating back to July 1, the former All-Star Game had an ERA of 3.74 ERA, a strikeout rate of 22.9% and a 5.3% walk rate of 65 innings. He was particularly keen in August, with 2.57 ERA as ERA in 35 innings. Galen started six games last month and offered five quality starts.
Once the Rattlers choose not to trade Garen, they seem likely to be a qualifying offer at the end of the season – though. However, long-term quality results on the mound can only make the team easier. The September performance will also make it easier for Gallen, who recorded a 3.29 ERA overall score in 815 1/3 innings starting in 2019-24, which can reject a year-on-year offer in the 22mm range. His recent hot streak has made his results worthy of careful surveillance in the final four weeks of the season. Gallen will face the Rangers tomorrow and search for his eighth quality on his last 12 trips to the mound.
